TOEFL Eligibility for Indian Students

If a candidate wants to appear for a TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language) exam, then they will need to be eligible for it first. Talking about the TOEFL exam eligibility, we want to tell you that there is no set eligibility criteria for taking it. If candidate has completed 10+2 or equivalent education from any recognized institution, then they are eligible to take the TOEFL exam.


Generally, TOEFL language test is taken by the students who want to study abroad and helps the institutions assess their speaking, writing, listening, and reading abilities. It is also one of the most important aspect of the admission application process which student needs to go through for studying abroad. It doesn’t matter for which TOEFL exam type a student wants to appear (TOEFL iBT, TOEFL at home, TOEFL test on paper has been abolished) they have to pay a TOEFL exam fee of 190 US dollars.

TOEFL Age limit & Educational Qualification

Talking about the TOEFL, There is no age limit to apply for it and candidates of any age group can appear for this language proficiency exam. Other than that, there is no eligibility criteria regarding the educational qualification requirements for the test. Any student who has finished his/her senior secondary (10+2) or equivalent education from any recognised institution can appear for the TOEFL test.

TOEFL Documents Requirements

Before applying & registering for the TOEFL exam, students should check if they have all the documents that are required by ETS (the body which conducts TOEFL examination) for TOEFL exam registration.

  1. Firstly, candidates aspiring to apply or register for a TOEFL examination need a valid passport. This passport should be valid for both at the time of registration and throughout the TOEFL examination. Other than that, students are requested to bring the original copy of their passport with them at the time of their TOEFL exam. Please keep in mind that the photostat copies or digital images of passport will not be allowed at the TOEFL exam centre.
  2. Secondly, students need to have a photo ID, if they don't have a passport. This identity document must be valid & have the applicant's photo on it along with their nationality.
  3. Thirdly, a letter of consent from the applicant's parents is necessary if he/she falls under the age of 15. Before taking the test, the consent form must be submitted and may be accessed from the official ETS website.

TOEFL IBT Home edition Eligibility

TOEFL IBT Home based test has no age limit & minimum qualification requirements, but candidates need to have few equipment & required environment at their place to be eligible for that specific test. Mentioned below are the system & environment requirements that a student has to meet in order to take the test.

TOEFL IBT System requirements

  • Candidates can only use a single monitor or single screen during the TOEFL exam.
  • Students need to have a licensed operating system on their operating system.
  • Candidates should have ETS secure test browser installed on their computer system. It is considered compulsory for TOEFL IBT Home edition test.
  • Earphones are not allowed during the exam, only external & internal speakers can be used to hear the invigilator
  • Headsets are not allowed during the exam, and test takers can use internal & external microphones to interact with the invigilator.
  • Candidates are required to set webcam at the place where invigilator gets the 360 degree view of their place.

TOEFL IBT Environment requirements

  • Candidates are required to be alone in the room where they take test and its door needs to be locked.
  • Candidate’s keyboard & computer needs to be on the desk.
  • Candidate has to place his computer system & chair in the place where the room’s door can easily be seen.
  • Candidate’s desk should not have any of the non-approved items such as Camera, study material or notes.
  • Candidates are not allowed to take notes on paper, they can use small desktop whiteboard along with an erasable marker.
  • Once the test ends, candidates have to show invigilator that all notes are erased.

Eligibility to re-attempt the TOEFL exam

Talking about the eligibility to re-attempt the TOEFL exam, students can attempt it as many times they want or until they get their desired TOEFL exam score. Generally, TOEFL exam has no Eligibility Criteria or restrictions related with the number of times a candidate can attempt a TOEFL test. We advise the candidates to have a gap of at least around 3 days between the first & second attempt.

TOEFL eligibility score

TOEFL eligibility score is the minimum TOEFL score that is required by the institutions abroad in order to give admission to the students. When most of the institutions decide the minimum admission requirements for students they set a cut-off for TOEFL score.
Generally, TOEFL English proficiency test is divided into four sections, which are writing, listening, reading and speaking. Each of these sections carry 30 points, therefore TOEFL exam has 120 marks in total. A score of 80 is considered good in TOEFL exam when candidate score at least 21 in each section. If a student want to ensure guaranteed admission to any institution, then they must score at least 95 with around 24 marks in every section.

In a nutshell, we would say that anyone aspiring to pursue their education abroad can take TOEFL exam as it is an integral part of the university admission process abroad. Students or aspirants of any age group can take it to know their proficiency in English language, they just have to complete their senior secondary or intermediate education before applying for it to prove their TOEFL eligibility.
