What is Duolingo?

The Duolingo English Test is a convenient and reasonably priced language certification exam that is recognised by thousands of organizations across the world. Candidates can take the this test online on their personal computers and demonstrate their ability in the English language. In this language test, four language skills—Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking—are tested, much like in traditional study abroad exams such as the TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE.

Well in this exam, the difficulty level rises with each correct response while decreasing with each incorrect response on the following question. Although the duration of the test is one hour, it can very well test the ability of the test taker with just a few questions.

No appointment is necessary to take the test, however it can be taken anywhere at any time by the candidates. In addition, you can also appear for the test from home. It also contains an updated component where applicants can record their responses to open-ended questions during a 10-minute video interview.

Duolingo Exam pattern

You must know that the other English language exams that can be taken at test centers differ slightly from the Duolingo Test Pattern. Being such a simple, quick, and reasonably priced online examination it can be taken wherever and anywhere you like. More than 4000 organizations around the world recognise Duolingo as a tool for testing English language proficiency.

The total duration of the test is 60 minutes. However, the Duolingo Test pattern is divided into two parts. The first is a 45-minute adaptive test that consists of a series of inquiries meant to gauge a candidate's proficiency in English. The questions change based on the test-takers' response. As a result, the difficulty level of the questions is set appropriately.

Moreover, the test is completely AI driven. In order to prevent repetition in the questions, the system chooses questions from a wide pool of questions. Other than this, the test has a 60-minute time limit but no set or predetermined number of questions. When the test's grade-assured system is satisfied with the participant's obtained score, the test is concluded.

The second part incorporates a Writing and Speaking test that lasts for 10 minutes with open-ended prompts. The 10-minute video interview is a separate element however, together with the test taker's score, open-ended prompts and writing and speaking samples are shared with institutions. You must have a front-facing camera, a microphone, functional speakers, and a steady internet connection, as these are the basic requirements to sit for the exam. A candidate has to :

  • Describe a picture.
  • Discuss a specific situation.
  • Spend a few minutes addressing the subject.

The test regulations and prerequisites are explained to test-takers within the first five minutes of the introduction. The scores are graded at a scale ranging from 10 to 160. The four components of the Duolingo test technically track the candidate's overall English language proficiency level. The intensity of the difficult questions is not listed in any particular sequence.

Introduction 5 minutes
Adaptive test 45 minutes
Writing and Speaking sample 10 minutes

Duolingo English test fees

Duolingo is a budget friendly certified English test that doesn't cost much. Usually the sum for the test and the interview ranges around $49.

How can you prepare for the Duolingo test?

For giving the Duolingo exam, it is very important to enhance your reading and listening in all aspects. Other than that, you can practice your English speaking by having conversations with a native English speaker, reading articles from authentic journals and newspapers, and listening to English podcasts. You can also take a practice test to familiarize yourself with the different kinds of questions that you will get in the actual test.

Duolingo English test syllabus

Three separate sections make up the entire one-hour online test. the introduction, the computer adaptive test, the speaking and writing samples in video format. Each component of the Duolingo syllabus is described in depth below.

Introduction

The test regulations and requirements are explained to the test-taker during the five-minute introduction. You must register for Duolingo with a valid government ID in order to take the test. A functioning computer or laptop, dependable internet, a front-facing camera, a microphone, speakers, and a room with good lighting are all requirements. Also, candidates must rigorously adhere to the test's rules and regulations, or Duolingo may cancel the exam, invalidate your results, or permanently ban you from taking future Duolingo English tests.

Adaptive Test (Graded)

This is the most significant section of the Duolingo English test since it contains a variety of questions that assess the candidate's proficiency in the language. While answering the short questions, the 45-minute segment evaluates your English proficiency. Depending on the test taker's performance, the questions' level of difficulty varies.

Writing and speaking sample (Video Interview)

Together with your score, it also includes open-ended questions that are shared with universities. There are two prompts in the 10-minute segment, and the candidate must respond to one of them.

  • You are given 30 seconds to select the prompt.
  • You have 1-3 minutes to try the video-speaking sample.
  • The time allotted for the writing sample is 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Before submitting their test, test-takers are given time to watch their video examples and practice their answers.

The computer-based Duolingo English Exam measures reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities to gauge real-world language proficiency. On a scale of 10-160, the test taker's proficiency is evaluated using an overall score. The candidate earns a score between 10-160 following the exam.

This is a total score rather than a sectional score. Top programmes typically require a score of greater than 120. You might need to compare your results to those of the TOEFL or IELTS tests. Duolingo claims that hundreds of institutions all across the world accept it. Many educational institutions, including some of the best universities, exist in the US.
