Easy tips for writing model answer for a Line Graph
- You need to have a clear introduction that describes what the line graph is about.
- You also need to include information from both the axis and the names of the categories of the axis.
- The next paragraph that you need to focus on is the overview. Usually, you will write the main trends of the given line graph in a paragraph in the overview.
- Then, you need to write the main decreases and increases and other key features in Paragraphs A and B.
- You do not need to divide your key points into paragraphs but focus on the decreases and the increases.
- You can also make relevant comparisons between different line graphs where necessary but the focus should be on describing the main trends.
- You can also use a range of adjectives and adverbs to describe the line graph.
- You can also use different nouns and verbs to describe the trends in the line graph.
- For the amounts, do not write from….to…… kind of phrases.
- You can also write a variety of time phrases. Do not forget to write percentages and numbers to write a detailed analysis of the line graph.
- You may also use a range of complex sentences to show the examiner your flexibility with using the English language in writing task 1 for line graphs.

Time phrases in Line Graphs
Line graphs may use a variety of time expressions to describe the changes in a line graph that happen over time. Here are a few time expressions that can be used in writing task 1 line Graph:
- Over the period
- From….to/ between….and
- Over the next……days
- In the following…..days
- ……days later
- At the beginning of the period
- At the end of the period
- The last year
- The final year
- Over the next year, and so on……

Sample Line Graph Question
Wheat Exports for three different regions: 1985-1990 (million tonnes)

Write a report in 150 words.
Model Answer
The line graph presents information regarding wheat exports in three different regions of Australia, Canada, and the European Community between 1985 and 1990.
In a general view, the wheat exports for the Australian region decreased steadily while they increased steadily for the European Community and fluctuated while decreasing for Canada in the five years.
Considering the Australian region, its wheat exports started at around 15 million tonnes in 1985 which increased slightly to about 16 million tonnes in the next year. Then, these decreased slightly to about 11 million tonnes in 1990. In comparision, these exports for the European community first decreased from 16 to 14 million tonnes in the first year till 1986.
The wheat exports for Europe first increased slightly to 15 million tonnes in 1988, then they rose sharply to approximately 21 million tonnes in the final year. For the Canadian region, however, these exports decreased from 19 to 17 million tonnes in 1986. Then onwards they fluctuated for this region while finally decreasing to about 18 million tonnes in 1990.
Conclusion
Therefore, while writing a report for IELTS Writing Task 1 Line Graph, you need to pay attention to the particular vocabulary for adverbs and adjectives. You may also use various time expressions and use a range of complex sentences to describe various trends in the task 1 Line Graph.
