IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, also known as GT, are the two different test categories. The grades for these two tests are the same. Your Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking abilities will be evaluated as you take the IELTS exam. All four skills are covered in the test, although the Speaking test is done separately. IELTS Reading Exam Scoring: How Is It done?

There are 40 questions in the Reading part. There are several different question kinds employed, including Matching, Multiple-Choice, True/False/Not Given, and Sentence Completion. The marking is a little different from the Speaking and Writing assessments because your responses are either correct or incorrect. Each accurate response will earn you one mark, and the total number of marks earned will determine your band score.

Some Possible Ways to Work on Your Reading Skills:

1. To pass the Reading section, you must quickly read through and comprehend a substantial amount of text while accurately answering questions about it. Reading as many texts as you can each day helps you become a better reader. You should read novels as well as academic books and newspapers to expose yourself to a variety of subjects. This will assist you in getting over your reading obstacles and improving your vocabulary.

2. The Reading section's primary goal is to analyze the data presented in the text. Reading requires attention; never rush through it. For accurate answers, take your time reading and analyzing all the pertinent information.

3. Always start by reading the questions. You will gain a better understanding of the content if you read the questions first. This will also prepare you to search for solutions.

4. Pay attention to your spelling. Your spelling will be marked incorrect if it is not accurate. Spelling mistakes are penalized as incorrect answers. Make sure that no question is ever left unanswered.

5. Verify your responses by reading them again. Some questions aim to deceive you into believing that you have the right responses from the outset. Pay close attention to the responses, and make sure you do so.

6. Keep in mind to underline the crucial details. Sometimes you'll accidentally skip a question or forget an answer, which will aid in your memory and comprehension of the material.

7. Use good time management to finish the chapters without rushing or getting stressed. Even if it is advised to give each passage 20 minutes, you are smarter than that. To avoid spending too much time on a single task, try to manage your time according to your level of reading.

FAQ

Can I apply for a re-evaluation of my IELTS Reading score?

Yes, you can request a re-mark of your IELTS Reading test if you are not satisfied with your score. However, there is a fee for this service, and the process can take up to six weeks.

Can I skip a question while Reading?

At the time of IELTS Reading attempt, you can skip a question and come back to it later. There will be no penalty for doing the same.

How is my IELTS Reading score calculated?

The IELTS Reading score is calculated based on the number of correct answers you provide. The Reading test contains 40 questions, and each question worth 1 mark. So, as per the correct answers, you will receive a score out of 40, which is then converted to a band score out of 9.

How many correct answers in IELTS Reading do I need to get a specific band score?

In IELTS academic Reading you need to provide 30-32 questions correct to get a band score of 7.0, and around 36-38 questions correct to achieve a band score of 8.0.

Will there be any negative marking for incorrect answers?

The IELTS Reading score is based on the number of correct answers you provide. Hence, you do not lose marks for incorrect answers.
