Begin to specialise in a career direction, for example branding, illustration or world building for gaming. Learn how to promote yourself in a competitive marketplace.

Program Outline

This programme aims to embed broad knowledge and skills in art and design with an industry focus. Content includes branding, illustration for world building/ gaming, 3D physical and digital model making, and physical and digital image making. Assessment methods in this programme may take the form of creative outputs, design or drawing journals, E-portfolio presentations (for example).  Some assignments will be individually assessed while others will be group work.

This programme can be studied full-time or part-time and is taught in our design studios and classrooms. The programme is made up of two 15 credit courses and three 30 credit courses. ?konga must pass all five courses to successfully pass the programme. 

Areas covered on this programme includes: 

  • Critical cultural and contextural learning to underpin projects
  • Printmaking including collograph techniques, and letterpress
  • Physical and digital montaging using imagery and type
  • DSLR Camera handling skills, studio and natural lighting, object, and portrait photography
  • Physical and digital worldbuilding for gaming and other applications including animation
  • Physical workshop practices including laser cutting
  • Creating a personal brand and website to promote individual creative practice
  • Brand identity design for products including logo development and packaging
  • Business knowledge and skills required to operate in the creative industry context of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and globally
  • Real world design scenario's; working with clients and entering design competitions
  • Exhibition planning and display
  • Direct teaching of Adobe CC: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, also Figma, Blender and Unity

    Mason Publishing Scholarship

    The AV and MJ Mason Trust offers an annual publishing scholarship. Established by Andrew Mason, a highly respected book editor, the scholarship is offered to one student studying publishing each year. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need and is aimed at students who would not otherwise be able to study publishing. The scholarship aims to cover approximately 75% of the tuition fee for one student studying full time.

    Penguin Random House M?ori and Pacific Publishing Scholarship

    To reduce barriers to equitable representation and encourage diversity and inclusivity in publishing in Aotearoa, Penguin Random House and Whitireia Publishing are offering a scholarship for one M?ori or Pacific student to study the Graduate Diploma in Publishing.

    Applications must be sent to [email protected] by 15th January each year. 

    Excel Digital M?ori and Pacific Publishing Scholarship
     

    To reduce barriers to equity and diversity, and to increase inclusivity in publishing in Aotearoa by assisting a M?ori or Pacific student to study the Graduate Diploma in Publishing at Whitireia and Weltec.

    Creative New Zealand Publishing Internships Initiative

    This internship offers paid work to three graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Publishing each year. It is funded by Creative New Zealand and administered by the Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ).

    The internship is a structured programme of mentoring for interns. It gives talented newcomers additional support after graduation to develop their confidence and experience, and it allows publishers to try out a new employee or role in their organisation and can facilitate a one-off project.

    Publishers who wish to host an intern apply each year in September to PANZ. A panel from PANZ and Whitireia then selects three top interns from graduate applications and matches interns with employers.

    Andrew Mason Prize for Most Promising Editor

    This annual prize acknowledges and encourages editors starting out on their careers. It has been offered by the Mason Publishing Trust each year since 2011 to a graduate of the Diploma in Publishing (Applied).

    Hachette Aotearoa New Zealand Best All-Round Student

    This annual prize rewards a Whitireia Publishing student at the end of each year who has:

    • Achieved high grades on the course
    • Demonstrated a passion for all aspects of publishing and the book industry in Aotearoa
    • Contributed positively to the class and projects.

      Whitireia Foundation Scholarship

      Applications for the Whitireia Foundation Scholarship are now open to domestic ?konga studying with Whitireia and WelTec | Te P?kenga in 2024. Please ensure you submit your CV and progress report in your application. The close down date for applications is 29 February 2024.

      Graduate Women Wellington Scholarship 2024

      INTRODUCTION

      Graduate Women Wellington is offering a scholarship to women students to study at Te

      P?kenga trading as Whitireia and WelTec - formerly WelTec in 2024.

      VALUE

      Two scholarships valued at $3,000 each will be available in 2024. The scholarship may be held

      concurrently with another bursary or scholarship provided the rules for those apply. The

      scholarship will be paid direct to the course fees of the successful applicant.

       

      CRITERIA

    • Applicants must be female students who have completed one trimester or more at WelTec during 2023
    • Applicants must be New Zealand Citizens or have permanent residency.
    • The criteria of selection will be based on:
      • Demonstration of a genuine desire to succeed in their chosen field of study;
      • Good attendance during the programme they attended at WelTec ;
      • Good level of academic achievement during the programme they attended at WelTec;
      • Financial or other circumstances, which could limit the applicant’s ability to continue their course of study.

    Applicants must be enrolled at WelTec in a full-time programme for 2024, undertaking study in an area of employment which is under-represented by women e.g.Construction, Engineering or Information Technology.

    Growing the size and skills of the mental health and addiction workforce takes more than just financial support. It’s also a combination of providing appropriate mentoring, coaching, cultural and pastoral care, as well as support in identifying employment and career pathways.

    • The Futures that Work Pacific Mental Health and Addiction Scholarship programme is open to those of Indigenous-Pacific descent, currently enrolled in an NZQA accredited mental health-related qualification.
    • As of 2024, Le Va is administering a new Addiction and Problem Gambling Harm Scholarship open to anyone studying towards an NZQA accredited addiction or problem gambling harm-related qualification.
