Program Overview

New Zealand has a strong demand for key staff in the healthcare sector. Our Level 7 Diploma in Community Healthcare and Support provides the training and technical skillset you need.

This programme will give you the key knowledge required to work competently in your chosen field and allow you to advance further into specialised fields within New Zealand's healthcare industry. Upon completing this programme, you will be work ready and able to apply your technical skillset in palliative and aged care, rehabilitation, health promotion and primary health care.

As part of this programme, you will undergo 160 hours of work placement in an aged care facility.

What You Will Learn

  • Primary Healthcare - Students will explore a variety of topics, including but not limited to; the effects of socio-political and cultural determinants of health, the concepts of health  promotion, health prevention and injury and primary health in relation to the health needs of the individual, governance structures, policy, legislation and fiscal influences on health care services in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
  • Professional Practice and Legislation - In this course, students will investigate the roles, functions and legislation related to health services and the role and scope of practice of the health professional in those services. They will gain an orientation to the breadth of possible employment opportunities enabling them to make an informed decision regarding their future employment.
  • Research for Healthcare Practice - The aim of this course is to introduce students to the principles of research. Students will develop the knowledge and skills of purposeful reading, critique and use of research for professional health care in practice.
  • Rehabilitation - In this course, students will develop the skills required for worker’s compensation injury management and return to work programmes in a variety of industries. Students will learn how to plan, design, implement and evaluate injury management systems and worker’s compensation processes that consider cultural perspectives and determinants of health.
  • Geriatric Care - This course will explore the holistic health of the older adult from a psychological, socio-economic, spiritual, political and cultural view. The students will explore the concept of positive aging, life expectancy and quality of life.
  • Palliative Care - Students will investigate the concepts of quality of life and quality of dying, reflecting on legal, ethical, cultural, religious and a personal viewpoint. The students will critically examine the holistic complexities of a life threatening illness on the individual, whanau/family, community and the health professional’s role and responsibilities in response.
  • Industry Work Placement - Work as a practitioner and advocate with individuals, whanau/families and organisations to develop health management plans that build on the strengths and enhance the resilience of individuals, whanau/families and communities.
