Program Overview

Our one year program, which has been designed in collaboration with New Zealand employers, provides you with specific knowledge, practical skills and relevant analytical techniques for work as a laboratory technician. These skills include critical thinking, problem solving and the ability to interpret results.

You'll also gain an understanding of laboratory quality management practice and reporting skills suitable for international quality standards, and have the skills to work independently and within groups. Personal skills such as punctuality, team work and time management will be developed.

You'll have the opportunity to enrich and broaden your knowledge with electives in areas such as microbiology, analytical and environmental chemistry, food microbiology and molecular biology. The program also includes a research project and work placement element to ensure you're work-ready when you graduate.

    Ara Scholarships

    Many of our scholarships recognise academic excellence, community leadership and sporting achievements, while others are designed to help meet skills shortages in specific industries or to simply encourage individuals into education. If you meet the eligibility criteria, we encourage you to apply when you apply for your program of study.
     

    Focus Scholarships

    These scholarships are provided by industry and community donors. In most cases, they relate to a specific area of study, level of study or purpose. They’re open to any Ara student who meets the scholarship’s specific eligibility criteria. Some of these scholarships require an academic transcript as part of the application.     The Rika Fund

    The Rika Fund is generously provided by the Hyuga family, who tragically lost their daughter in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Rika had a commitment for achieving her dreams.

    This scholarship is dedicated to helping others who have a clear vision for achieving their career aspirations.

    The fund awards a cash grant of $2500 to support a full time domestic or international Ara learner to achieve their goals and dreams.

    To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must:

    • Be an International fee paying student and hold an Indian passport
    • Have completed and passed one academic year of a 2 or more year programme at Ara
    • Have an inspirational approach, demonstrate strong leadership skills or be a high academic achiever

    This scholarship is available for students entering into their 2nd or 3rd year of study at Ara and does not cover course-related costs.
