Ever wondered what grading system is followed in the country of your choice? Here is a guide to calculating CGPA to percentage to study abroad, covering all your doubts.
Assessing one’s academic performance is essential to decide the future course of action. One of the primary reasons to measure this performance is to identify and acknowledge a student's skills, which further helps in scrutinizing career options or subjects that fit their potential.
Different colleges and universities in India use different methods to measure a student’s academic performance, but percentage-based and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) grading systems are the two most popular methods used.
While Indian institutes accept both grading methods, universities and colleges abroad focus majorly on CGPA to evaluate the performance of international students worldwide. And if you plan to apply for education abroad, this writing will surely provide important insights on CGPA and how to convert percentage-based assessment into CGPA.
Benefits of the CGPA grading system
The assessment done under this method is based on advanced marking patterns.
Under this grading system, students' knowledge is not merely based on numbers but on their overall performance in the course duration, reducing the pressure of scoring higher than other students.
This system also makes studies more effortless and straightforward, helping students identify their strengths and weaknesses.
How to Calculate CGPA from Percentage?
Subject |
Grade Point |
Subject A |
7 |
Subject B |
9 |
Subject C |
8 |
Subject D |
7 |
Subject E |
9 |
Total |
40 |
The first step is to add the grade points earned in every subject, which in the example above is 7+9+8+7+9=40.
The next step is to divide the cumulative value by the number of subjects. For instance: 40/5= 8.
Now the final step is to multiply this number by 9.5 to calculate the percentage.
The point to note here is that CGPA cannot exceed a 10-point scale.

What is GPA (Grade Point Average)?
Often students confuse GPA as a synonym for Grade point, which is wrong. While CGPA evaluates the performance of students in the entire course duration, GPA measures a student’s performance in one semester or a single unit. Also, GPA is a 4-point grading system accepted by US universities, but CGPA is a 10-point system recognized in other parts of the world.

FAQ
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is an overall average of all the grade points earned by a student in the complete academic session. The CGPA is usually calculated on a 10-point scale, which can be derived by dividing the percentage by 9.5.
While a higher CGPA makes the admission process easier, students with a low CGPA can improve their chances of admission by highlighting other achievements in their application. Factors such as test scores, extra-curricular activities, well-written SOP (statement of purpose), LOR (letters of recommendation), etc., can significantly help students.
CGPA is required during the admission process to universities abroad as it helps the admission authorities determine a student’s current academic position, including subjects relevant to pursuing a degree.
A student with low CGPA can get admission for a master’s degree abroad if the university has a low CGPA requirement. The student also needs to highlight non-academic achievements to make a strong application profile.
Universities, colleges and schools in India consider their grading system, with a majority using the percentage or grade-based evaluation system.
