The University of Waikato - Tauranga Campus Overview

The University of Waikato opened in 1964 after many years of energetic lobbying by a group of Hamilton locals, determined to have a university in their city. To begin with, facilities were sparse, but in early 1965 new buildings were officially opened by then Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson. Sir Don Llewellyn was founding Vice-Chancellor.

The University of Waikato is committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio. With around 13,000 students and 1,500 staff, we offer a distinctive and rewarding university experience, while pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge. The University of Waikato has three unique campuses:

  • Hamilton campus
  • Tauranga campus
