Program Overview
Financial engineering is a cross-disciplinary field combining financial and economic theory with the mathematical and computational tools needed to design and develop financial products, portfolios, markets, and regulations. Financial engineers manage financial risk, identify market opportunities, design and value financial or actuarial products, and optimise investment strategies.
For students with a good background in mathematics and statistics, this new Master of Financial Engineering (MFEng) will equip you with industry-level skills and knowledge, and provide opportunities to apply those skills. By directly linking real-world problems in financial engineering to an underlying theoretical framework, graduates will be capable of high-level performance in the financial industry.
The MFEng is part of a suite of qualifications for students who want to gain a breadth and depth of technical skills and knowledge across the key disciplines of finance and economics, mathematics and statistics, and computer science and software engineering.

- Minimum Level of Education Required: To be accepted into this program, applicants must have a bachelor's degree with a B+ Grade Point Average in 300-level courses; and completed specified 200-level MATH and STAT courses (or equivalent courses); and been approved to enrol.

Award Amount: $5,000 - $10,000 towards fees
Brief Description:
This scholarship recognises and supports international students with strong academic abilities from India who are beginning their educational journey in New Zealand at Te Whare W?nanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.
Value/Benefits:
- Undergraduate: Contribution to tuition fees of $5,000 paid in the first year of study.
- Postgraduate: Contribution to tuition fees of $10,000 paid in the first year of study.1
- Level of Study: Undergraduate, Postgraduate
- Closing Date: 15 November 2024 (Semester 1 2025 start) and 30 April 2025 (Semester 2 2025 start)
- Tenure: One year
- Number available annually: Varies
- Applicable enrolment during tenure: Full-time study in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program at the University.

Confirmed for 2026 and still being processed for S2 2025:
- $6,000 for master’s programmes
- $4,000 for the first year of the Bachelor of Commerce (up to $12,000 overall)
