Program Overview

Students who have already completed Year 12 (or equivalent) may start with the Stage 2 Diploma, which has the same course content and structure as year one of the corresponding Curtin University undergraduate degree. Upon completion of your Diploma, you will progress directly into the second year of your Curtin University Bachelor's degree program.

Stage2 - Diploma of Arts and Creative Industries - Communication, Design and Arts
The Diploma of Arts and Creative Industries leads into the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Communications, Bachelor of Creative Arts or Bachelor of Design. You will learn transferable skills in communication, creativity, critical thinking, digital knowledge, presentation, problem solving, research and teamwork that can be applied to a range of workplaces in the creative industry.

Leading to:Bachelor of Communications
In this course you'll gain expertise in a variety of communications areas including journalism, digital media, screen production, public relations, marketing and graphic design.

You’ll study subjects in media, design and business, gaining foundational knowledge in media and corporate communications and the scope to specialise in two fields of your choice.

You’ll also develop critical thinking and practical skills, using commercial-level equipment to produce content for print, radio, film, television and online media.

In your first year you’ll be introduced to the different spokes of communications and study optional units that reflect or refine your learning in specific communication areas.

In your second and third years, you’ll choose two specialisations to study: one media specialisation and one design or business specialisation, or two media specialisations.

Specialisation: Corporate Screen Production
This specialisation introduces you to advertising and promotion, corporate communications, informational and educational media. It will develop your skills in the creation of corporate media projects to international standards, while also reflecting your own culture.

You’ll tell visual stories that either effect social change, or deliver an original visual idea, working collaboratively with not-for-profit community organisations on an approved project to create media content in an authentic, professional environment.

You’ll examine the history, practices and narrative forms of non fiction media texts with a specific focus on documentary film.

You’ll be introduced to national and global cinematic and broadcast industries, and examine historical and contemporary business models and screen audiences. You’ll combine critical studies with creative practice, through action/reflection and production/analysis tasks.

The specialisation includes practical multi-camera and single-camera skills development, and will give you an understanding of studio-based production in a practical, production-oriented environment. You’ll work collaboratively in authentic industry roles to produce a television project.
