Duolingo Syllabus
The Duolingo English Test has three sections. Detailed syllabus and components of each of the sections is given below.
Introduction
The introduction section explains test regulations and requirements to the test-taker during five minutes. Requirements of the test that include a functioning laptop, dependable internet, front-facing camera, microphone & headphone/ speakers, and good lighting, are tested in this time.
Adaptive Test (graded)
The adaptive section contains objective-type questions assessing the candidate's language proficiency. The short questions asked during the 45-minute segment evaluates English proficiency through different difficulty levels of questions including completing the words within sentences, completing passages with the right sentences, choosing the correct spellings, listening and writing, writing and speaking about photos, interactive reading and listening and more.
Writing and Speaking Sample (ungraded, with video interview)
The 10-minute segment consists of prompts, and the candidate must respond to one for writing and speaking each. The candidate selects the section and the topic in 30 seconds and writes about any one of the topics for 3 to 5 minutes. Writing topics are based on personal life, preferences, and choices.
The speaking topics are also based on one’s life, preferences and choices in which the candidate speaks for about one to three minutes.
The complete test is graded on a scale of 10-160 and the test taker's proficiency is evaluated using an overall score. Institutes that a particular student has applied to, can consider a conversion of scores to TOEFL or IELTS as well.
