All Components have integrated skills Test takers must perform a variety of tasks. Some of these tasks will require test takers to speak or write in response to a question based on what they have read and listened to.
Fully computer-delivered Take the fully computer-delivered CAEL test at home, online, or at one of its more than 40 test centres.
The whole test time takes around 3.5 hours. The exam provides results for four components: speaking, reading, listening, and writing.
Each test contains unscored items. Unscored items are utilized for test development in each test. These unscored items can be found throughout the test and follow the same format as the scored items. You will be unable to distinguish between scored and unscored items, so give the full test your all.

Generally, CAEL total test time is about 3 hours 30 minutes and is done in one sitting

  1. Speaking: Reply to on-screen prompts verbally; 7-10 minutes
  2. Integrated Reading: Read passages and reply to questions; 35-50 minutes
  3. Integrated Listening: Listen to passages and reply to questions; 25-35 minutes
  4. Academic Unit A: Answer comprehension questions and write a reply; 60-70 minutes
  5. Academic Unit B: Answer comprehension questions and write a reply; 40-45 minutes

  • One long listening passage on the same topic, with comprehension questions
  • One writing question requiring a short response, using material from both the long reading passage or the long listening passage
