If you are interested in developing basic research skills to address real-world questions in a variety of applied settings, this program is for you. In the MAPRE course and practicum-focused program, you will have the opportunity to supplement your coursework with an extended practicum in a community setting.

A program for all students

Students do not have to have an undergraduate degree in psychology. In the MAPRE course and practicum-based program, students with different academic backgrounds can learn the skills necessary to do applied research in a variety of settings. In the MAPRE program, recent university graduates and current professionals will work together and learn how to approach program evaluation and research using a team-based approach. Students will have the opportunity to select elective courses that meet their own interests and needs.

A focus on experiential learning

Experiential, hands-on learning is the focus of this degree. From the start of this one-year program, you will have the opportunity to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experiences. In addition, students will learn learn how to design a program evaluation and about statistics and psychological testing to support their program evaluations.

In the fall, you will decide where you would like to do your summer practicum. In the winter, you will work with the program coordinator and your community partner to develop a program evaluation proposal. After you have completed your courses, you will have the opportunity to work at your partner organization to conduct your program evaluation.

Unique to the Maritimes

The MAPRE program is the first focused on evaluation in the Maritimes. No other universities in the Maritimes offer graduate degrees in program evaluation, which means that residents of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia must travel to other provinces to be educated on this subject matter. The development of this program was driven by need.

Community partners have relayed to the MAPRE committee that they routinely send their employees out-of-province to complete training in evaluation. This degree allows students to stay in the Maritimes while completing their graduate studies
