Program Overview

The environmental geosciences provide earth-science students who have environmental or interdisciplinary interests with a background to pursue careers or graduate studies in environmentally related geoscience fields, especially in areas related to water resources, water contamination and remediation, oceanography and climate change.

Many earth scientists are interdisciplinary.

  • Geochemists deal with the chemical make-up of everything from surface and ground waters to magmas and rocks in the earth's crust; with using geochemical techniques in the discovery of new mineral and energy reserves; and in addressing environmental concerns with the extraction of these reserves.
  • Biogeochemists investigate the cycling through the global environment of chemical elements, from essential "nutrients" such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, to toxic metals such as mercury and uranium.
  • Geobiologists are concerned with the paleontology, biogeography, and morpho-behavioural functional evolution of fossils; paleoecological aspects of ancient life forms, their history, and the evolution of life; and establishing a relative time frame for past geological and climatic events.
  • Geophysicists measure and study the gravity, magnetic, and electrical fields of the earth; record and analyze seismic waves generated by earthquakes and man-made sources; and image subsurface water and hydrocarbon reservoirs and leakage.
