Foundation Studies Program Standard

Our Foundation Studies Program provides you with a pathway to follow your dreams of studying business, IT, engineering, medicine, nursing and much more at university.
 

Program Benefits

  • For students studying at the College, once you achieve your required progression score, you are guaranteed entry to your packaged degree, and, for most bachelor’s degrees, you won’t need to provide any further English language evidence.
  • We will ensure that you understand all the additional entry requirements for Medicine, Dentistry, Midwifery, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy.
  • The program is streamed, allowing you to choose subjects to suit your bachelor degree choice.
  • You will be issued with a packaged Confirmation of Enrolment for the entire duration of study at the College and the University.
  • In addition to weekly class attendance, students are also expected to complete 20-25 hours per week of independent learning.

Major: Microbiology and Immunology

Prepare to become a future health leader with Adelaide University’s Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences. Learn from internationally acclaimed academics and study anatomy using real human specimens. Put theory into practice with hands-on learning experiences that include high-tech simulations. 

Majoring in Microbiology and Immunology, you’ll learn how infectious agents interact with humans and how our immune system fights pathogens. Discover how our bodies respond to bacteria, viruses and parasites. Explore global public health issues relating to the outbreak of infectious diseases and the rising threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria or drug-resistant pathogens. 

Apply your learning in lab-based practicals and work placements, including a dedicated placement in a relevant industry or research setting. Your in-demand, transferable skills will set you up for a fascinating career in the health and biomedical sector or for further postgraduate studies.

 

What you'll learn
The Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences is a dynamic three-year program that dives into human biology, health and disease. Teaching across the health and medical science disciplines, it gives you the essential skills and knowledge to succeed in the evolving health landscape. 

As a biomedical and health sciences student, you'll take core courses in health systems, research, anatomy and physiology. You’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of health and care, which includes essential cross-cultural and First Nations perspectives embedded in the degree.  

Throughout your studies, you'll build key skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving and time management. You'll also have the opportunity to choose up to two majors and complete a capstone research project, preparing you for a range of career paths in health. Broaden your expertise with elective courses from across the health and biomedical spectrum, or opt for a second major. This flexibility is a highlight of the Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences, allowing you to tailor your degree to your interests. And there's no need to decide immediately – you'll have ample time to explore and see what excites you. 

In your Microbiology and Immunology major, you’ll learn how infectious agents interact with human hosts at the molecular, cellular, individual patient and community levels to cause disease.?Explore biology and study the science of cells, molecules, bacteria, microbial genetics and biochemistry.  

Discover how our bodies react to bacteria, viruses and parasites, and how our immune system fights pathogens. Learn about virus structure, replication and infection processes – gaining insights into viral infections, vaccines and antiviral drugs. Investigate the global impacts of infectious diseases, including the urgent challenges posed by the increasing resistance to antibiotic and antiviral therapies. 

Build lab skills and apply molecular and cellular biology techniques in up to 100 hours of practical classes across your second and third years. In your final year, you'll also complete a Work Integrated Learning placement – providing hands-on experience in professional or research settings.

    Scholarships

    The University of Adelaide College International Scholarship rewards the international graduates of the University of Adelaide College.

     

    This scholarship is:

    • Available for graduates of the University of Adelaide College commencing at the University of Adelaide.
    • Open to citizens of any country (except Australia and New Zealand); and
    • Provides a waiver of 10% of the annual tuition fee for each year of the program for the full duration of the degree.

     

    Value
    The scholarship offers a 10% tuition fee reduction for the minimum standard full-time duration of the scholar's chosen undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

     

    Eligibility
    To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

    • Be a graduate of the University of Adelaide College;
    • Have a University of Adelaide offer of admission (full offer or conditional offer) as a full-fee-paying international student;
    • Enrol in a full time study load for each study period of the degree;
    • Complete the acceptance process as outlined in your offer of admission.

    Note: Scholarship applicants who are eligible for more than one scholarship offered by the University of Adelaide will only be entitled to receive one scholarship (the highest value scholarship award for which they are eligible).

     

    Exclusions
    The following applicants are not eligible to receive these scholarships:

    • Current University of Adelaide students who are transferring from one degree to another prior to successful completion of their program of study (internal transfers)
    • Students who are recipients of a scholarship covering tuition fees awarded by a recognised scholarship awarding body such as a government ministry or department
    • Applicants for Masters by Research or Phd programs;
    • Applicants for certain programs; see the scholarship terms and conditions for a list of excluded degrees.
