Program Overview

The need to understand and help address people’s mental health issues is growing.

Societies are facing a mental health crisis, an aging population, and increasing inequalities.

This course will prepare you with the necessary theory and research skills required to understand and investigate the determinants of people’s mental health. It also provides a pathway to study at PhD level, for those looking to specialise in a doctorate in clinical psychology. It is currently the only psychology master course in Scotland to offer work experience over two semesters as part of a non-clinical research or work-based placement.

You will study three advanced modules of your choice, ranging from areas such as:

  • foundations of adult mental health
  • psychology in practice (placement)
  • developmental psychopathology

You will also learn advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods, and will conduct a research dissertation supervised by an academic member of staff.

Here at the University of Dundee, you'll benefit from access to our dedicated postgraduate student social and study spaces. Our sophisticated facilities include a developmental lab, EEG labs, eye-tracking technologies, and physiological response measures.

You'll be taught by research-active academic staff, with advanced knowledge of the field. As a small and close-knit department, we take a more personalised approach to your learning experience. Getting to know our students on an individual basis means that we are able to provide individual support throughout.

Situated in the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, you will meet and socialise with students from other disciplines. You'll also be encouraged to attend seminars outside of timetabled psychology classes, allowing you to situate your learning in a broader social and academic context. This is also a good opportunity to network and make contacts across disciplines.
