Program Overview

This master's course is designed for those who already hold an undergraduate degree. For this version of the Mental Health Nursing course, you will complete a dissertation on a topic of your choosing.

Registered nurses are skilled healthcare professionals. They can work in a range of healthcare settings.

As a mental health nurse, you will provide person-centred holistic care. In doing this, you will work with other healthcare professionals. You will also work in partnership with patients, families, and carers.

Our MSc Mental Health Nursing course will prepare you to support patients. These patients may have a range of mental health conditions. These could include:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Mood and personality disorders
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Learning disabilities
  • Neurodevelopmental conditions
  • Substance misuse

You will learn practical and cognitive skills. These will help you develop into a value based and reflective mental health nurse.

When you study mental health nursing with us, your time will be split equally. This will be divided between 50% of your time spent learning on campus and 50% learning on placements.

On placements, you will be in settings such as:

  • Hospitals
  • In the community
  • Secure care
  • Nursing homes
  • Substance misuse services

By being on placement, you will develop the hands-on skills needed to work in healthcare.

You will learn through practical workshops in our Clinical Skills Centre. This will help you to develop your nursing skills.

Our Clinical Skills Centre has state of the art facilities. This includes a simulated hospital ward. You will build your confidence through interactive sessions and acted patient scenarios. These sessions will enable you to practice your skills in a supported environment.

When you complete this course you will receive both an academic and professional qualification. This can lead to you becoming a registered mental health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
