Program Overview

International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities
The International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities will prepare you for your undergraduate degree in the humanities and social sciences at Sheffield. The Faculty of Social Sciences includes the Management School, the School of Law and Sheffield School of Architecture.

What will you study?
This is a 1.5 or 2-semester programme that has been developed in collaboration with the University, so modules are relevant to your field of study. Core modules are studied by everyone on  this programme and will develop the English and academic skills you need for your degree. The pathway modules you study will depend on your chosen progression degree at the University.

Once you complete your International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities and achieve the required grades, you can enter your undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield.

Leading to: Mathematics BSc

This flexible course gives you the freedom to explore lots of different areas of maths or tailor your course to your own interests. Once you’ve mastered the essentials of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and probability and statistics, you’ll be able to choose from a wide variety of options. Topics range from differential geometry or algebraic topology, to codes and cryptography or the theory of relativity.

We have a small but focused number of modules in the first year that cover all the maths essentials you’ll need for the rest of your degree. You can develop programming skills using Python and R, which can be applied to lots of jobs that involve data, and learn to use the typesetting software LaTeX, which mathematicians and statisticians use to present their work.

In your second year, you’ll continue to build a powerful toolbox of mathematical techniques that you can apply to increasingly complex problems. There is less compulsory maths and more options, so as well as calculus and algebra, you can study topics including differential equations, the mechanics of motion in fluids and solids, statistical modelling and computer simulations.

A module on careers development gives you the chance to find out about different career paths, learn about potential employers, write an impressive CV and sell yourself at job interviews.

By your third year, you’ll have the skills, knowledge and experience to explore many different areas of maths. We’ll give you lots of optional modules to choose from, so you can study the topics that are most useful to the career path you want to take or that you enjoy the most.
