International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities
The International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities will prepare you for your undergraduate degree in the humanities and social sciences at Sheffield. The Faculty of Social Sciences includes the Management School, the School of Law and Sheffield School of Architecture.
What will you study?
This is a 1.5 or 2-semester programme that has been developed in collaboration with the University, so modules are relevant to your field of study. Core modules are studied by everyone on this programme and will develop the English and academic skills you need for your degree. The pathway modules you study will depend on your chosen progression degree at the University.
Once you complete your International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities and achieve the required grades, you can enter your undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield.
Leading to: Politics and Philosophy BA (Hons)
The combination of politics and philosophy is the perfect course to study if you’re interested in examining and critiquing some of the most pressing issues today. You’ll examine ideas about human nature and society that underpin political theory, and consider questions such as:
- Are we doing enough to address climate change?
- Is violence or torture ever justified?
- Should animals have the same rights as humans?
You’ll get to study modules from each department; half of your modules from the Department of Politics and International Relations, and the other half from the Department of Philosophy. In your politics modules, you'll have the chance to study a variety of topics, covering themes in international relations, public policy, political theory and British politics.
Our staff come from and research countries across the globe, meaning they bring their own experiences and specialisms into the modules they teach. Modules cover geographical areas such as the EU, China, Africa and the Middle East.
In philosophy, you'll study the essential cornerstones of the subject (including philosophy of language, ethics, metaphysics and logic) alongside specialist modules. Topics range from philosophy of education, law or medicine, to film and philosophy, or feminism. You'll also study the history of the subject from Plato to the French existentialists.
