Program Overview

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. Fluent university graduates are in demand not only in the international business community, but also sought by agencies and non-governmental organizations such as the World Bank, World Health Organization and United Nations.

Many of our graduates are at the top of their fields working in diverse careers, from social services and medicine to media and the arts. Our program offers valuable skills and the opportunity to build your professional network by participating in faculty research projects and community-engaged events.

Explore the language, literature, and linguistics of the Spanish-speaking world alongside award-winning professors. You’ll study how Spanish developed and its many contemporary dialects worldwide. Examine a range of literary works and the compelling sociohistorical contexts in which they emerged, from Spanish colonial texts to the modern creative innovations of Latin American writers; from Cervantes and the birth of the modern novel to micro-literature and songs as poetry.

What you’ll learn

  • Develop a strong command of both written and spoken Spanish.
  • Examine the contemporary social and cultural context of Spanish-speaking societies in literature and media.
  • Explore the history and diversity of the Spanish language in Europe and the Americas.

Hands-on experiences

  • Connect with peers and scholars through lecture series, and theatre, music, and literary events.
  • Engage with local and international communities in for-credit research projects in our upper-level courses.
  • Immerse yourself in Spanish culture and language through study abroad opportunities.
