The musical theatre program at Weber State provides intense training in acting, singing and dancing, while encouraging you to explore your own interests along the way. Musical theatre majors experience all aspects of theatre and enhance their class work through on-stage and off-stage assignments. Weber’s dedication to new works allows students to actively shape the future of the art, while developing crucial skills for success.

What You’ll LEARN at Weber

As a musical theatre major, you’ll develop the skills necessary to begin your theatrical career. Our majors study a variety of acting methods, as well as vocal technique and music theory. They develop crucial practical skills such as stage presence, oral presentation, audition technique, networking skills, entrepreneurship and personal branding.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Have writing skills and ability to use research tools (library, internet, etc.).
  • Be able to present critical thinking through verbal and written presentations regarding the theatre. Specific areas of expertise will include major works, major figures, theory, and history.
  • Have a practical, working knowledge of how to produce a play on stage, including all related performance, script, design, and technical considerations.
  • Be able to critically evaluate what they and others have created.
  • Develop necessary skills to be proficient in at least one area of theatre (performance, teaching, technical/design-costume, technical/design-scenery, technical/design-lighting, technical/design-sound, directing, theatre management, or playwriting), with the ability to identify, analyze and resolve specific problems pertaining to that area.
  • Understand the historical context of theatre, drama, and performance including plays, major figures, costumes, scenic innovations, and theoretical approaches, and how these relate to contemporary society and culture.
  • Have experience with individual and collaborative processes needed to produce and understand theatre.

    Scholarships are awarded based on merit. Available for students new to Weber State, transfer students and continuing students, scholarships are awarded based on criteria such as:

    • Academic performance
    • Activities or interests
    • Community service
    • International status
    • Academic departments
    • Unlike student loans, scholarships do not need to be repaid. Depending on the award, they may or may not be renewable.
