The mission of the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) is to prepare entry-level athletic trainers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and behaviors committed to enhancing patient outcomes, professional development, and advocating for the athletic training profession.

For the individual interested in combining healthcare and athletics, sports, physical activity, or occupational health, a career in athletic training is for you. As an athletic trainer, you render service or care to patients and clients under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician. As a part of the health care team, your services as an athletic trainer include:  

• Prevention, Risk Reduction, Health Promotion, and Wellness
• Assessment, Examination, and Diagnosis
• Critical Incident Management
• Care Planning and Therapeutic Intervention
• Healthcare Administration, Delivery, and Management

The Master of Athletic Training at Southern Connecticut State University is a 62-credit, full-time, two-year, residential, entry-level, professional graduate-level program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) 2001 K Street NW, 3rd Floor North, Washington, DC 20006, 844-GO-CAATE (844-462-2283).

Consistent with Southern Connecticut's commitment to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good, the Master of Athletic Training provides a high-quality, lower-cost alternative to most other athletic training programs nationally and within Connecticut.

We welcome students from all backgrounds to our program and from any undergraduate major or degree, provided students have met all admission requirements. Students completing their bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply during their final undergraduate study semester and may be granted conditional or early admittance until degree conferral.

Our educational program includes face-to-face classroom instruction, simulations, and extensive supervised, hands-on, full-time immersive clinical experiences in a broad array of healthcare services, including:

• Preventative and primary care
• Emergent care procedures
• Diagnostic techniques
• Care planning and clinical measures
• Healthcare delivery strategies

After two years of classroom and clinical education, Master of Athletic Training graduates are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) national examination to become an athletic trainer. As the longest accredited athletic training program in Connecticut, we are proud of the many accomplishments of our students, faculty, and preceptors.
