Program Overview

St. Catherine University’s gender and women's studies program is unique in its focus on intersectional feminism and its commitment to preparing students to be changemakers. The program offers a blend of academic and experiential learning, and a grounding approach that examines gender, race, class, and other differences. We value our place as a women's college, which provides a supportive and collaborative learning environment for women.

In the gender and women’s studies program, you will learn to:

  • Think critically about gender and other differences in society
  • Develop strategies for justice in the workplace, communities, and policies
  • Learn the history of women's leadership and strengthen your leadership skills
  • Understand the gender binary and experience outside the binary
  • Build coalitions locally and globally
  • Connect understanding of gender/race/class to academic fields and your profession
  • Write clearly and persuasively in multiple genres–academic writing, personal narratives, and policy documents

In addition to coursework, the program offers a variety of opportunities for experiential learning, including:

  • Internships with organizations working on issues of gender equity
  • Service-learning projects in the community
  • Research opportunities with faculty mentors
  • Conference presentations

The gender and women’s studies program works closely with the St. Kate’s Center for Women. The Center offers scholarships to attend PLEN leadership seminars in Washington, D.C., awards for writing and research, grants for student action projects, and more. The Center also is a gathering space for supportive conversations, engagement with difficult issues, and creative organizing for change.
