Program Overview

Anthropology is the most interdisciplinary field in the College of Arts and Sciences, combining the humanities with social science and the hard sciences. We study problems of heritage and identity, community-building in physical and virtual contexts, experiences of refugees and migrants, the environmental impacts of human activity, and the interplay of technology and globalization. In both archaeological and present-day contexts, we analyze the social construction of meaning, culturally distinct modes and systems of thought, and the diversity of religious experience. In the process, we offer rigorous academic training, hands-on experiential learning, and advanced research opportunities in a discipline that is truly global in scope.

The study of anthropology at Catholic University is holistic, integrating environmental, economic, political, social, and expressive information to form composite pictures of human social life and cultures with a focus on cultural heritage and cultural resources management. Our small class sizes allow a variety of approaches to critical thinking and problem-based learning. Students are also invited to explore and assist in faculty research projects, join in summer field work, and are encouraged to study abroad and complete at least one internship.
