Program Overview

International Foundation Year in Business, Media and Social Sciences
The International Foundation Year in Business, Media and Social Sciences is your route to a range of undergraduate degrees at the University of Sussex. It is a university preparation course that will give you the English language level, academic knowledge, and study skills you need to succeed in your degree. It is an excellent choice for students who would like a little more support with their studies, or who do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry into a degree programme.

During the International Foundation Year your learning will be structured in the same way as University teaching. This ensures you receive excellent preparation for undergraduate study.

You will study a range of different modules throughout the programme, based on the pathway that you choose. You can choose one of the following pathways:

  • Business, Accounting and Economics
  • Social Sciences with Maths
  • Social Sciences and Law
  • Film and Media
  • Finance and Technology (FinTech)

Leading to: International Development BA (Hons)

The global news agenda is dominated by challenging issues including health, climate change, conflict, migration and wealth inequalities. As an International Development student, you’ll explore some of these challenges and what is being done to address them.

At Sussex, you’ll learn from specialists focusing on areas such as markets and finance, gender and sexuality, social justice and rights, health, new technologies and many more. Building on our expertise, you’ll develop the critical knowledge and practical tools to be part of the change you want to see in the world.

You’ll take an interdisciplinary view, learning about global challenges from different perspectives. These include Anthropology, Geography, International Relations, Education and Economics. On your course, you’ll:

  • Learn about global challenges such as poverty and inequality and their root causes from a perspective of social justice
  • Understand how researchers, policy-makers, development practitioners and affected communities around the world address these challenges
  • Work with fellow students on creating alternative and innovative responses to these challenges.

In addition to lectures and seminars, we offer:

  • Practice-based modules and creative workshops for you to apply your learning
  • Regular seminars with world-leading development experts.

This will help you develop the practical skills you need to participate in creating just and equitable change. When you graduate, you’ll have the knowledge and abilities a wide range of employers are looking for.

We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision. We’ll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities described in this prospectus. However, if we need to make material changes, for example due to government or regulatory requirements, or unanticipated staff changes, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.
