Program Overview

Why choose this course

Surrey’s mechanical engineering degree courses are designed to meet the rapidly evolving needs of modern society and are professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Our programmes provide broad engineering knowledge, leading to a wide range of possible careers. What is mechanical engineering? Mechanical engineers play a critical role in the everyday functioning of the world we live in, and work in areas including:

  • Automation
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Mechanical design
  • Robotics
  • Stress analysis
  • Sustainable materials.

In addition to learning from internationally recognised academics, you’ll have access to industry-standard facilities, including our state-of-the-art Design Centre, materials testing laboratory and the UK’s only environmental wind tunnel.

You can apply to study for either a BEng or MEng. The latter is a direct route to a masters qualification, known as an integrated masters.

What you will study
The course encompasses topics such as fluid-dynamics, stress analysis and numerical methods. In addition, you’ll receive training on the latest industry-standard design and solid modelling software, automated manufacturing techniques and sensors, actuators and advanced control systems, which drive modern mechanical engineering products.

For your final year project, you may choose to make the most of Surrey’s partnership with the National Physical Laboratory. You could also explore the cross-disciplinary aspect of mechanical engineering, applying your skills in areas ranging from prosthetics to satellites.

Mechanical engineering placements
A crucial part of all our courses, our award-winning Professional Training placements, give you invaluable practical experience and enhance your knowledge of mechanical engineering. You can spend your placement working here in the UK or in another country.

While on placement, you’re paid by your employer but you’ll remain a member of the University. Our students tell us the time they spend in a real engineering context transforms them into the professional engineers they want to be.

Placement will boost your understanding of your studies in the later stages of your course; it also allows you to try out a specialised engineering sector, improve your CV and build up a network of contacts.

Companies participating in the scheme both in the UK and abroad include:

  • Airbus
  • Arup
  • BAE Systems
  • CERN
  • EnOcean
  • GE Aviation
  • Jaguar Land Rover
  • Maresa
  • Mercedes HPP
  • Nissan
  • Rolls-Royce
  • Siemens.
