This Liberal Arts BA offers outstanding flexibility. You’ll get to balance a breadth of knowledge across disciplines with the opportunity for in-depth study in a ‘major’ subject of your choice.

The degree comprises 13 subjects, allowing you to build a personalised curriculum by pursuing your interests. During your liberal arts degree, you’ll be able to choose modules in Politics, Digital culture, English, Film studies ,Geography, History, International development, Modern languages (French, German, Spanish or Portuguese), Music, Philosophy, Classical and Hellenic studies, Comparative literature and Theology and religious studies.

Each year will include at least one distinctive required module that will anchor your study of the liberal arts.

The first year will see you tackle three required modules, each designed to give you a solid foundation for further study. You’ll start by looking at the ‘Lives of London’ with an interdisciplinary module that draws on issues across the major subjects to give you a taste of what awaits you. You’ll analyse various multimedia materials and visit cultural sites to think about the city around you and how multiple disciplines are needed to understand complex problems.

You will also learn how to write and think in an interdisciplinary way with a required module on Writing Liberal Arts. For example, you could examine the subject of bodies to think, talk and write about how different disciplines impose ideas of bodies on their audiences and learn how to reconcile divergent concepts.

As a first-year liberal arts student, you’ll also need to take a required language module from the Modern Language Centre, which will foster enhanced learning skills and cultural awareness. You’ll develop your understanding of diverse perspectives and gain language skills that are increasingly valued in the global job market.

For the rest of the first year of the Liberal Arts BA, you’ll get to pick from a range of optional modules that give you a broad introduction to study in different disciplines and prepare you to select a major. For example, you could study the literature and thought of Ancient Greece or Rome and contrast this with a module on working with digital content or theories of new media. You could balance comparative literature modules with an introduction to film studies or look at medieval or early modern history and learn about the making of the modern world. You could even start to explore development studies, ethics, politics, the sociology of religion and more.
