Program Overview

The Medical Diagnostic Sonography advanced diploma program prepares students with the necessary skills and expertise to become proficient diagnostic medical sonographers. Students will gain the knowledge needed to integrate patient medical history, diagnostic data and clinical information to formulate effective sonographic scanning strategies. They will be trained to analyze technical data to produce accurate findings for physician interpretation and adhere to established protocols to maintain a safe and controlled environment. The program also includes instruction on emergency response procedures, infection control and equipment maintenance, ensuring optimal image quality and diagnostic accuracy.

The program also focuses on developing the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, health-care professionals and other stakeholders, fostering trust and ensuring collaboration. It emphasizes the delivery of patient-centered care, maintaining patient safety, dignity and comfort.

In line with professional standards such as the Sonography Canada National Competency Profile, students will learn to perform patient assessments and deliver sonographic services within their scope of practice while adhering to ethical, legal and regulatory guidelines. The program also emphasizes the importance of continuous professional development, equipping students to stay current with advances in diagnostic imaging. The top specialized skills learned are in medical ultrasonography, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology and patient safety.

Graduates of the program will be prepared to write the Sonography Canada national certification exams and complete the Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment, positioning them as competent diagnostic medical sonographers capable of delivering high-quality patient care in an evolving health-care environment.

Work-Integrated Learning

The Medical Diagnostic Sonography program at Humber Polytechnic includes a series of clinical placements that provide students with immersive, hands-on experience in healthcare settings. Throughout the program, students engage in supervised sonographic examinations across a range of specialties, including abdominal, vascular, superficial structures, gynecology, and obstetrics. These placements allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, build confidence in clinical environments, and meet national standards for entry-level sonographers. Each placement is structured to support skill development and professional growth, producing career-ready graduates.

Clinical Placement Locations and Student Responsibility
While every effort is made to place students in their preferred clinical location, placement opportunities are dependent on site availability and program needs. As a result, students may be assigned to placements outside of their preferred region, including locations across Ontario. Students are responsible for any costs associated with travel, temporary relocation, or accommodation required to complete their placement. We recommend planning ahead and maintaining flexibility throughout the placement process.
