Program Overview

The Health Information Management (C139) two-year diploma program focuses on providing the skills and knowledge needed by health information practitioners by preparing graduates to participate in the collection and organization of health information. This program is fully accredited by the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

The Health Information Management curriculum content emphasizes:

  • Biomedical sciences
  • Health informatics
  • Health record systems
  • Medical classification systems and coding
  • Data collection
  • Statistical analysis and presentation
  • Health-care legislation

Health Information Management practitioners:

  • Work with health-care providers and stakeholders to transition from the paper health record to the electronic health record
  • Develop, implement and maintain health information systems
  • Protect patient information and promote confidentiality awareness
  • Control the release of medico-legal information
  • Evaluate standards of documentation according to established criteria
  • Provide essential information for clinical research, quality improvement, utilization review, budgeting and other administrative applications

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Keep current with relevant local, national and global health care and health information management issues, trends, technologies and standards to support health information management systems and processes and guide professional development.
  • Assess personal health information from individual client visits for accuracy, completeness and consistency using knowledge of biomedical sciences, medical diagnoses and interventions, causes of diseases, and medical terminology, abbreviations and acronyms.
  • Apply current, accurate codes and standards to relevant personal health information from individual client visits using health information, coding, classification and abstracting systems proficiently.
  • Comply with the legal obligations, as well as with the professional, ethical and organizational standards that ensure privacy, security and confidentiality in the access, retention, storage and disposal of personal health information.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of health information management practices, policies and processes to support client care, organizational goals, operations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in maintaining the completeness, accuracy, consistency, timeliness and integrity of health information throughout the management of its lifecycle.
  • Use knowledge of systems interoperability standards, database architecture, software versioning, classification and terminology mapping, data collection requirements, legal obligations, and the health information management lifecycle and apply fundamental project management principles and practices to support the procurement and implementation of health information management systems.
  • Retrieve and release personal health information in response to legitimate requests, in accordance with statutory requirements, and within specified deadlines.
  • Participate in the retrieval, analysis and presentation of relevant health information to stakeholders to support organizational decision-making, epidemiological studies and clinical research.
  • Work professionally, ethically and collaboratively with stakeholders and as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team, within a structured, regulated and evolving system of health care, to enhance the collection, distribution, use, security and awareness of quality health information and its impact on client care.
  • Use current and emerging technologies to support the management, analysis and presentation of health information.

Onshore International Student Scholarship

Already living in Canada? You could be eligible for a one-time $2,000 entrance scholarship! 
To be eligible for the $2,000 onshore scholarship, you must apply to an eligible program at George Brown Polytechnic on or after April 11, 2026, and be onshore at time of application.

Amount of Award
$2,000 scholarship disbursed over two terms: 
  • $1,000 payment?posted to the student’s account after Day 10 of term 1

Method of application No application for the scholarship is required. The scholarship is assessed upon application and awarded automatically to registered students (day 10) who meet eligibility criteria.?
Method of award Funds will be awarded once and applied directly to the student’s account (tuition fee balance) after day 10 of the first semester of study.? 
Eligibility Criteria & Conditions
  • New international applicants who applied to George Brown Polytechnic on or after April 11, 2026 for Fall 2026, Winter 2027 and Spring 2027 intakes. 
  • Applicants must be in Canada with a valid status and submit proof of status and Canadian address at the time of application.
  • Applicants are still required to complete required tuition deposit and fee payments by the due dates on the Letter of Acceptance (LOA). 
  • Must be paying international fees.? 
  • Current George Brown Polytechnic students are not eligible.? 
  • The student must be in Canada with a valid status when submitting their application to George Brown Polytechnic.? 
  • Must be a registered international student with a full-time course load past day 10 in the awarded term.? 
  • The scholarship will be rescinded if the student withdraws.? 
  • The number of eligible applicants may exceed the funding for this one-time scholarship. If eligible applicants exceed the funds available, scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to applicants who have accepted their offer of admission and completed required tuition payments.

George Brown offers entrance scholarships for eligible degree students based on academic achievement.

This is a renewable scholarship, which means that if you maintain a grade point average of 3.7 (80%) in your program, you will receive additional funding towards your tuition in future years.
*All award recipients will be required to provide their SIN or ITN for T4A tax reporting purposes as mandated by the government.


Eligibility Requirements

  • You must meet the eligibility requirements for the scholarship at the time of your initial application and on Day 10 of the initial term of the scholarship.
  • Eligibility will be assessed by the Admissions department based on the grades used to determine the student’s admission score for the degree program. The student’s admission score, as calculated by the Admissions office, will be calculated to one decimal place.
  • Applicants with conditional offers of admission are required to meet the admissions conditions set out in your offer letter, or your offer and the scholarship could be revoked later.
  • You must be registered in, and complete, a full?time course load.
  • You must remain full-time in the program to be eligible for renewal.
  • Make sure to accept your offer and pay your tuition deposit by the deadline dates to receive this entrance scholarship.
  • Entrance scholarships are only eligible for the specific full-time degree program you've been accepted for and the entrance level/term on your offer letter.

George Brown College Funded Scholarships

Diploma/Degree Scholarships

Thirty-one scholarships to be awarded to eligible returning students in full-time post-secondary programs (diploma or degree) as follows:

  • Fall competition- 14 worth $5,000 and 17 worth $1,000
  • Winter competition- 6 worth $5,000 and 9 worth $1,000

Application deadlines:

  • For Fall competition: Deadline is September 30th
  • For Winter competition: Deadline is January 31st

To qualify an applicant must:

  • be an international student with a valid Study Permit
  • be registered in a full-time 2, 3 or 4-year diploma or degree program
  • have completed at least two consecutive semesters of study with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 prior to the current semester
  • have participated in activities that have made a contribution to other students, their academic department and/or the College community in general
  • has not previously been awarded a scholarship through the George Brown College International Centre

Certificate Scholarships

The award is available to eligible returning students in full-time post-secondary Certificate or Post Graduate Certificate program (2 or 3 semesters) as follows:

Scholarships of $2,000:

  • 12 awards for January competition
  • 10 awards for May competition
  • 10 awards for September competition

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Student must be an international student
  • Student must have at least completed 1 semester
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • The student must be actively involved in the Community (college and/or external)

  • For January competition: Deadline is January 31st
  • For May competition: Deadline is May 31st
  • For September competition: Deadline is September 30th

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

There are eighteen scholarships available for eligible ESL students as follows:

  • Scholarships of $1,000: 9 Awards (August Competition)
  • Scholarships of $1,000: 9 Awards (January Competition)

To qualify an applicant must:

  • be a registered full-time international English for Academic Purposes Program student
  • have completed at least one level of the English for Academic Purposes Program with a grade A average
  • have participated in activities that have made a contribution to other students, their academic department and/or the College community in general
  • has not previously been awarded a scholarship through the George Brown College International Centre

Required Supporting Documentation

  • A cover letter briefly outlining the contributions you have made to other students, your department/School and/or the College community in general (include the start date/ end date of the activity; name of the organization; number of hours per week; and some specific details about the activity).
  • Attach a letter in support of your application from a George Brown College staff member.

Application deadlines:

  • August Competition: August 31st (recipients will be notified by September 30th)
  • January Competition: January 31st (recipients will be notified by February 28th)

How will the award decision be made?
Successful scholarship award recipients will be selected by a committee established by the College; the committee will have representation from academic divisions. The decision of the committee is final and cannot be appealed. Only the recipients of the scholarships will be notified.
