Program Overview

Fanshawe College's Law Clerk (Co-op) program is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in legal principles combined with the practical law clerk training that students will need to enter the diverse, fast-paced modern field of law. As a graduate of the Law Clerk program you will work as part of a team in law firms, corporate legal departments, financial institutions, insurance companies, legal technology providers, title insurance companies, Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments or in any other capacity where a legal environment exists. Depending upon your choice of career path, you could find yourself preparing motion records and trial documentation, interviewing witnesses, arranging trial dates and adjournments, drafting corporate/commercial documentation, completing Family Law Act financial statements, administering estates, negotiating leases, administering contracts, completing legal research, searching titles or processing real estate transactions. At Fanshawe College you will learn about many areas of Canadian law including civil litigation, corporate/commercial, debtor and creditor rights, real estate, landlord and tenant, estate administration, family law and contracts. You will refine your communication and information processing skills as you learn how to research, analyze and write in the legal environment. You will develop an ability to work with a variety of leading-edge legal software applications and online commercial legal databases and services.

Co-operative Education
In order to be eligible for co-op, students must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be academically complete at the commencement of their co-op work term.
This is a two-year Co-operative Education program.  Students who fulfill both the academic and co-op requirements of the program will be eligible to graduate with a Co-op Endorsed Diploma.  More information about co-operative education can be found at www.fanshawec.ca/co-op.
Applicants seeking a non Co-op Endorsed Diploma should apply to the Law Clerk program, Program Code LCK1.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Support the needs of clients and legal professionals through the use of accurate terminology and professional communication strategies, both orally and in writing;
  • Complete all work within routine and unexpected time lines and limitation periods within the legal environment;
  • Use current and relevant electronic and print resources, within the legal environment, to conduct legal research, to assist with file and evidentiary management, to facilitate communication and generate legal documentation, complying with current regulations and procedures;
  • Research and summarize the presenting legal issues, applying knowledge of substantive law, to support the legal team;
  • Apply rules of procedure to support best legal practices;
  • Conduct oneself professionally in adherence to the guidelines of the Law Society of Upper Canada;
  • Carry out clerical and administrative duties for the operation of a variety of legal environments;
  • Outline strategies for ongoing professional development to ensure continuing competence as a Law Clerk;
  • Act equitably and justly with diverse populations*;
  • Provide support for legal professionals in courts and administrative tribunals within the legal system.

Students admitted to the following programs are eligible for scholarships:
Academic Entrance Scholarship

Academic Entrance Scholarships is designed to support international students by offering financial support for eligible programs.

  • Scholarships are applied to first-term tuition fees after the deposit is received.
  • In-person or hybrid programs only. Not applicable for online programs
To be eligible for the Academic Entrance Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
  • The student must start their program in January 2026, May 2026 or September 2026.
  • The deposit must be paid within 30 days of receiving the offer.
  • If the deposit is not paid within the specified timeframe, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn.
Program Type Scholarship Amount
  • The scholarship is automatically considered at the time of admission, a letter will be issued along with the offer letter with details about the student and the scholarship.
  • The scholarship will be applied directly to the student’s tuition account and will be deducted from first term.
  • The scholarship amount will be shown on web-advisor once the deposit is paid.

Spousal Scholarship
2-year Programs
The Spousal Scholarship Program is designed to support international students by offering financial support for families when both spouses enroll in eligible programs at Fanshawe College starting in January 2026, May 2026 or September 2026.

 

Eligible Regions: Students from any country are welcome to apply for this scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The primary applicant (student) must apply to a PGWP-aligned post-secondary program at Fanshawe College.

Note: Primary applicants from India must choose and enroll in a 2-year graduate certificate to qualify.

  • The spouse must also be admitted to a full-time program of equal or lesser duration. This program may be PGWP or non-PGWP aligned.
  • Along with academic and English language proficiency documentation, both applicants must submit a copy of their marriage certificate along with a completed Spousal Scholarship application form.
  • Both students must pay the required deposit and fees by the specified date on their most recent invoice to secure their seats.
  • If either the primary applicant or the spouse withdraws from Fanshawe College prior to completing their program, the scholarship will be withdrawn.
Scenario 1: Primary applicant enrolled in 2-year program – Spouse enrolls in a 2-year post-secondary program; $7,000 CAD
will be applied to the spouse’s tuition account in first-term and second-term. ($14,000 total).

Scenario 2: Primary applicant enrolled in 2-year program – Spouse enrolls in a 1-year post-secondary program; $7,000
CAD will be applied to the spouse’s tuition account in first-term only. ($7,000 total)
Application Submission:
  • Both applicants must submit the marriage certificate and a copy of the Spousal
    Scholarship Application Form with their applications.

Note: We recommend that both applications be submitted at the same time to avoid confusion.

 

Admission, Fee Payment and the Scholarship Award:

  • Scholarships will be awarded at the time of admission. A letter with the complete details will be issued.
  • Both partners must confirm acceptance and pay the required tuition deposit within 30 days of receiving their offer.
Spousal Scholarship 1-year Programs The Spousal Scholarship Program is designed to support international students by offering financial support for families when both spouses enroll in eligible programs at Fanshawe College starting in January 2026, May 2026 or September 2026.

Application Deadlines:
Both students must apply within the designated intakes: September 2025 or January 2026, May 2026or September 2026.

Eligible Regions: Students from any country are welcome to apply for this scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The primary applicant (student) must apply to a 1-year PGWP aligned post-secondary program (Accelerated Diploma, Certificate or Graduate Certificate at Fanshawe College).
    Note: The spouse must also be admitted to full-time program of equal duration. This program may be PGWP or non-PGWP aligned.
  • Along with academic and English language proficiency documentation, both applicants must submit acopy of their marriage certificate along with a completed Spousal Scholarship application form.
  • Both students must pay the required deposit and fees by the specified date on their most recentinvoice to secure their seats.
  • If either the primary applicant or the spouse withdraws from Fanshawe College prior to completingtheir program, the scholarship will be withdrawn.
  • $7,000 will be applied to the spouse’s tuition account and viewed through the student’s Web Advisor Student Portal after after both deposits are paid (1-year program).
     
  • The student receiving the spousal scholarship will not be eligible for any other financial supports from Fanshawe College, including but not limited to Fanshawe College or Donor-funded Awards, Scholarships, and Bursaries.
     
  • The primary applicant (not receiving the Spousal Scholarship Program) may still qualify for other Fanshawe College or donor-funded awards, scholarships, and bursaries; however, the primary applicant will not be eligible for the Academic Entrance Scholarship.

Application Submission: Both applicants must submit the marriage certificate and a copy of the Spousal Scholarship application form with their applications.
