Program Overview

Camosun College offers a diploma in the field of Allied Chemistry and Biotechnology for students who are intrigued by scientific discoveries and research work. The aforementioned diploma is an undergraduate course for a period of 24 months and has produced some great professionals in the field of scientific research. The students also have an option of transferring to a British Columbia University as a third year student.

Students get the opportunity of working in a wide range of labs, including those associated with biomedical and health-related biotechnology, forestry, fisheries, mining, agriculture, oceanography and the environment. In the two years of the ACBT program students are provided hand on training on lab equipment and lab safety techniques. During the first year of the diploma there are a total of three terms and introductory education in fields like chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology. Students are also trained in lab safety procedures, good lab practices, lap technicality as well as precautionary measures.

The second year of the diploma involves a solid understanding of modern tricks and techniques in the field of biotechnology, biochemistry and other fields pertaining to research. The students are also open to an optional internship program that provides major laboratory experience and enhances their diploma with an edge of professional work.

What you'll Learn
Get started in the lab

In the two-year ACBT program, you'll get hands-on training in lab safety and technique. The program will prepare you for a career in lab work or transfer into the third year of a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry or microbiology.

What to expect
Located at our Lansdowne campus, the ACBT program is two years long. You'll spend lots of time in the lab, giving you the practical skills that employers look for. In addition to developing your scientific knowledge, you'll have the opportunity to carry out a major project at an external lab as part of an optional internship. For part-time students, you'll arrange a personal learning plan with the Program Chair to modify the full-time schedule for your own flexible program.

Year 1
In your first year, you will take three academic terms (fall, winter and spring). Courses include a foundation in biology, chemistry, English, math and physics.

Year 2
Build on your solid fundamental understanding of modern techniques in biotechnology with two more terms to deepen your skills in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and immunology.
