Texas Wesleyan University was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1890. After the merger with financially stable Texas, Wesleyan Academy in Austin gave birth to the new institution of Texas Wesleyan College in 1935. Since then, the college started readmitting men along with women, and it became co-ed.
Texas Wesleyan University has continued to be a liberal arts institution with a progressive student and academic life program. In extension to great undergraduate programs, the University added extra graduate programs in education in the 1970s.
The University has historically linked service to a residential population along with its vigorous commitment to commuting the local adult population. To give flexibility regarding the scheduling of courses and to identify the special needs of adult students, the University introduced C.E. Hyde Weekend /Evening Program in 1994.
