The Biomedical Sciences program is focused on applied science that deals with human and animal health, including the study, research, and knowledge of health and the application of that knowledge to improve health, cure diseases, and increase our understanding of how humans and animals function. Within this program, we are committed to providing a cutting-edge educational experience and personalized guidance and mentorship to students from all backgrounds that will prepare them for careers in medicine, other health professions, or biomedical research in academic, clinical, or industry settings. This interdisciplinary program incorporates courses from Biology, Chemistry, Math, Health & Exercise Science, Psychology, and Sociology & Anthropology to provide a foundational framework and knowledge of high-demand technical skills that will set you apart in qualifying for professional school programs and future jobs.

Vision Statement

The Biomedical Sciences program aims to build a reputation as a provider of high quality, cutting edge training and education in biomedicine within the region and beyond. We will develop and maintain a strong curriculum to support the variety of interests of our students and diverse career paths they can follow after graduation. We will enhance student learning by providing access to equipment and technology at the forefront of biomedical research, including genetic engineering, genome sequencing, and advanced microscopy. We will expand awareness of a broad array of career options and activities in biomedical research, human medicine, and allied health professions and seek partnerships with healthcare providers, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses in our region. We do all of this with the greater goal of reducing disparities in participation in the biomedical sciences among historically excluded groups, including people of color, women, socio-economically disadvantaged individuals, members of the lgbtq community, and individuals with disabilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop a basic understanding of the physical sciences examining mechanisms and processes across a broad range of scales.
  • Develop an integrative understanding of human health in preparation for careers in biomedical sciences, health care, and clinical research.
  • Formulate strategies to address complex quantitative and qualitative problems within biomedical sciences.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical conduct in scholarship and research demonstrating honesty, accuracy, efficiency, and objectivity while upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

    Scholarships

    Scholarships for International Students

    Southern Oregon University provides merit-based and need-based scholarships for international students. Some scholarships are awarded based on the information provided in your application for admission. However, some of our international scholarships require additional information from you to be considered for an award.

    Ashland Rotary Scholarship

    $1000 per year for continuing SOU international students only. Selection criteria based on academic performance, career goals, campus involvement and community participation, and financial need.

    Cascade International Student Scholarship

    The Cascade International Student Scholarship is a merit based award for students attending Southern Oregon University. The scholarship is for new undergraduate, graduate, and graduating SOU Intensive English Program students. The award amounts vary from $1,000 to $9,000 per academic year and is renewable scholarship.
