Program Overview

Want to perform? Teach? Work in the music industry? The University of Toledo’s comprehensive, accredited music program offers:

  • A wealth of options you’d find at a big school
  • The family atmosphere and small class size you’d find at a smaller university

Highlights

  • Learn from the masters. Faculty members are performing musicians with international reputations. World-renowned musicians come to The University of Toledo for master workshops and classes. Recent visitors include:
    • Internationally renowned opera singer Marilyn Horne
    • Contemporary saxophonist Dave Liebman
    • Grammy-winner Alan Broadbent
    • Jennifer Jolley, co-founder of North American New Opera Workshop
  • One-of-a-kind ties to a thriving local arts community. Not many colleges have the connections the UToledo Music Department has. Undergraduate music majors perform with the best: the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Opera and Toledo Jazz Orchestra. Student musicians also play at off-campus music festivals and events and at local clubs and venues like The Toledo Museum of Art.
  • Teaching opportunities. UToledo’s Community Music Program lets students earning music degrees get some extra cash teaching one-on-one or group lessons. Students also work with local youth through BeInstrumental, a local nonprofit.
  • Student music groups. The University of Toledo has lots of active, energetic music groups.  Ensembles are open to all UToledo students. They range from Latin, jazz and experimental jazz to concert band, orchestra and choral groups. Join music-focused fraternities and sororities, Rocket Drumline or Rocket Marching Band, one of the largest and most visible student groups on campus.
  • Want to teach music? Get a bachelor of music education degree from the Judith Herb College of Education. Most of your classes will be in the Music Department.  After getting your bachelor’s degree in music, you also can earn a master’s degree in education and get an Ohio teaching license through UToledo’s Licensure Accelerated Master's Program (LAMP).
  • Required auditions. Prospective music majors — even music education majors — must audition and take a music theory assessment.
  • Required internships. Music technology majors get experience as music producers and earn course credit by interning at a music studio.
