University of Toledo art history majors go to class at UToledo’s Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of the Toledo Museum of Art. Study the history of art and architecture and analyze art’s meaning, style and social context. Gain access to TMA’s 45 galleries, library, research facilities and art education programs.

  • Invaluable museum experience. UToledo students who choose the optional concentration in art museum practices work with UToledo faculty and Toledo Museum of Art professionals to design and install an exhibition at the museum.
  • Real-world skills. UToledo art history bachelor’s degree students are prepared for the current job market. They learn how to critique, write, research and problem solve as well as how to use tools and digital technology.
  • Top-notch faculty. UToledo Art Department faculty members get to know their students. Faculty members exhibit their work around the world and bring their experiences into the classroom.
  • Classes on the Toledo Museum of Art campus. Art history majors attend class in UToledo’s four-story Center for the Visual Arts on the TMA’s campus. The Frank Gehry-designed center offers undergraduate art students direct access to the museum’s resources.
  • Work in the community. Art majors have added to their portfolios by:
    • Curating exhibitions at “guerrilla galleries” in Toledo
    • Crafting wearable sculptures displayed on the runway in the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion
    • Attending classes and conferences around the U.S. and the world with UToledo professors
  • Accredited. The Department of Art in UToledo's School of Visual and Performing Arts is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
  • Become an art educator.
    • UToledo's art education graduate degree program is offered in partnership with the Judith Herb College of Education.
    • A student with a bachelor's degree in art can earn licensure and a master's degree in art education at the same time through UToledo’s Licensure & Alternative Master's Program (LAMP).
