Program Overview

Students in the undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Program at South Dakota Mines build a strong foundation in mathematics (calculus I, II, and III as well as differential equations and probability and statistics), the basic sciences (human biology, general and organic chemistry, and general physics), and engineering principles (statics, circuits, machines, and systems, etc.). They also take additional fundamental courses with a focus in biomedical engineering, such as Biomedical Engineering Fluid Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering Thermodynamics, and Properties of Biomaterials, before selecting from a list of biomedical engineering electives.

During their first semester on campus, freshmen in the Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Program take Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, a course that provides students with opportunities to learn more about the field of biomedical engineering and the many career paths that can be followed within this diverse and ever-expanding discipline. Students are assigned an academic advisor, who is a faculty member they will work with to schedule coursework and grow professionally throughout their time at South Dakota Mines. They are also assigned a hybrid advisor through the Student Success Center who will help them to navigate the transition into college, develop strong study skills, and manage their time effectively during their first year on campus. Students will also work with a peer mentor who is an upper level student in the Biomedical Engineering Program and with the Program Coordinator, who can help students look for professional development opportunities and serves as a point of contact for undergraduates in the program.
