Program Overview

With rapid changes in industry, companies are seeking engineering graduates who are ready to work from day one. Few engineering degrees in Canada will give you the same level of hands-on experience with industry-standard advanced technology. You’ll also practice finding solutions for real-world problems in the industry and the community.

Work with the latest mechanical engineering technology
Sheridan's labs are like no other in Ontario. Get a degree that prepares you to work with 3D printers, robotics, rapid prototyping, integrated energy systems including solar, wind, and geothermal energy, HVAC systems, water jet technology, advanced mechatronics system equipment and more. At Sheridan, we believe the best way to learn is to roll up your sleeves and get hands-on.

Specialize in energy or mechatronics
In your third and fourth years of study, you’ll specialize in one of two technical streams — energy or mechatronics. In the energy stream, you’ll learn to provide environmentally and economically sustainable solutions for energy generation, distribution and usage. In the mechatronics stream, you’ll learn to solve engineering problems with mechanical, electrical, computer and control engineering.

Learn skills that are in high demand
Whether you choose to specialize in energy or mechatronics, you’ll be learning skills that are in high demand. Become a leader of tomorrow in the growing energy systems sector and help solve the world’s energy problems through your ability to analyze, model, design, develop and operate sustainable systems. Or study robotics (including robotics with artificial intelligence and vision systems), programmable logic controllers (PLC) and other automation systems, skills that are extremely valuable as industries continue moving towards automation.

No matter which stream you choose, you’ll get a solid foundation in essential maths (linear algebra, calculus, statistics) and sciences (chemistry, physics, computer programming, electrical circuits). You’ll also take core mechanical courses with a balance of engineering science and design in three key areas: mechanical sciences; systems, measurements and control; and thermal-fluid sciences.

Co-op and internship opportunities
Our Mechanical Engineering degree program features a four-month internship after your second year. You can also choose to apply for our co-op program, which adds two optional co-op work terms after your third and fourth years. This work experience will give you a chance to apply what you’ve learned in an industry setting, discover your interests, see what employment opportunities are available in the field and build on your résumé.

Our industry partners are excited about the combined 12-month co-op opportunity, which is longer than many co-op placements. They recognize that this provides more opportunity to establish working relationships with students that they can hire in the future.
