Program Overview

Applied Mechanical Design is a one year Ontario college graduate certificate program. The program is designed for students to build on their previous education in engineering. Students will learn the skills required to work in the mechanical design and manufacturing sector through a combination of in-class learning, labs, and hands-on experiential learning

Your Learning Experience
This graduate certificate program is designed to enhance and build on the theoretical knowledge gained from studies in mechanical engineering and provides students with training in finite elements analysis, geometric tolerancing and computer aided design (CAD) with a focus on fast, inexpensive and quality design. Topics related to metrology, industrial communication, quality systems and design guidelines will be reviewed. An applied capstone project will provide students with the opportunity to design, implement and manage real world solutions using skills in industrial communications, supervision, project management and documentation.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  • Develop design solutions for mechanical problems utilizing complex engineering principles and practices.
  • Analyze and synthesize technical data to develop graphics and related technical documents conforming to engineering standards.
  • Select and manage appropriate hardware and software used in the creation of engineering designs.
  • Develop engineering designs utilizing a combination of principles and knowledge of manufacturing processes and engineering methods.
  • Determine reliability and quality control measures and procedures to evaluate and manage advanced manufacturing and mechanical design processes and systems.
  • Incorporate sustainable, economic, ergonomic, safe and ethical approaches into design projects.
  • Plan, implement and manage mechanical engineering design projects in response to stakeholder and industry needs and requirements.
  • Design experiments that evaluate fit, form and function of critical components utilizing principles of statistical process control and finite element analysis.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in written, graphic and spoken form using appropriate vocabulary and formats for professional engineering projects.
