Dealing with stress while studying Abroad
Shifting to an entirely new country to study in can be stressful and challenging. All the challenges, problems, and difficult circumstances put us under stress. For an international student, this could include
academic pressure, peer pressure, meeting the set standards, and work
responsibilities. Faced with any challenge, we put in additional efforts
and use all our resources and the support system to meet the challenge.
Thus, if handled properly, stress increases the probability of one's
survival.
Some of the significant causes of stress faced by international students:
Homesickness
One of the significant causes of stress
is moving away from your family and friends to an unknown place, making
you homesick. It can lead to a mix of feelings like anxiety,
loneliness, and separation, but it is pretty natural as going out of
your comfort zone could be demanding and take time to settle. Most
students feel alienated from the area.
Academics and Work
New academic environments, study
styles, and work cultures can be challenging. Managing both studies and
work could be tiring and exhausting for them.
Independence
A feeling of being independent can be
annoying and demanding as you don't have anyone to rely upon. It
sometimes takes a toll on your health. Managing accommodation, household
chores, paying rent, and facing language barriers could be a leading
cause of stress.
Cultural Shock
Due to the vast difference between the
culture of the host country and your own country, you may face a culture
shock. Adjusting to a new culture involves your understanding of it and
your cooperating skills.
But as it's said, every challenge or problem has specific solutions to
overcome it. Here are a few of them that may help you fight stress:
Building up Connections
Sharing your experiences with
fellow international students can reduce your anxiety and tension and
make a support system for yourself. Socializing always help as it makes
you meet new people and boost your self-confidence.
Stay connected with family and friends
Take out time
for talking to your family and friends, as this will motivate you to
keep up with the pace. Also, make time for new friends and plan an
excellent outing to feel energized and refreshed. Be open to the
experiences as they come and explore as much as you can.
Task-oriented strategy
It involves acquiring information about the stressful situation,
alternative action courses, and probable outcome; It also involves
deciding priorities and acting to deal directly with the situation. For
example, schedule your time better and think about how you solved
similar problems.
Being Assertive
Assertiveness is a behavior that
helps you communicate your needs, wants and thoughts clearly and
confidently. Being assertive will feel more confident, have higher
self-esteem, and have a solid sense of your own identity.
Time- Management
The way you pass your time
determines the quality of your life. Learning how to plan time and
delegate can help to relieve the pressure. The basic principle of time
management is to spend your time doing the things that you value or that help
you achieve your goals. It depends on being realistic about what you
know and that you must do it within a specific time.
Self-Care
If you keep yourself healthy, fit, and relaxed, you
are better prepared physically and emotionally to tackle the stresses of
new situations. You should develop a stress-resistant personality that
helps you cope with difficult circumstances.
There is nothing to worry about much about. Adjusting to a new country
will take some time, but you will gradually adapt to the culture. Canam Consultants will assist you and give you tips on dealing with stress
