The University was named after the well-known 19th century Maryland philanthropist John Hopkins. He was a renowned entrepreneur and an abolitionist having Quaker roots and was a staunch believer in developing public health and education in Baltimore. John Hopkins University was established in 1876, and Daniel Coit Gilman being their first president. He oversaw the opening of the university and many other institutions, which include the university press club, the school of nursing, and medicine.
