Program Overview

Humber’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma program prepares you to work with children (birth to 12 years) and their families. Students can expect to attain and exceed the practice-ready knowledge, skills and attitudes employers are seeking from ECE graduates in supporting children, families and the community by engaging in innovative learning and simulation experiences. These experiences take place within Humber's Carol Reid Early Childhood Education Lab, the Carol Reid Innovation Centre, as well as within the Humber Child Development Centre - interacting with our scenic arboretum and nature-inspired playground and exploring responsive, inclusive teaching methods and leading edge-curriculum.

You will learn about:

  • how children learn
  • how Ministry and government legislation and guidelines inform practice
  • how to create responsive, inclusive play-based learning environments and natural play spaces for children, families and the community
  • human development using a wide range of worldview perspectives
  • Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of being, seeing, knowing and doing
  • observation and reflection, and the co-preparation of documentation by children, families and the community
  • social justice, advocacy, leadership and the role of the ECE professional
  • the image of the child and the significance of viewing children from a wide variety of lenses
  • the importance of collaborating with relevant community agencies
  • the importance of responsive relationships
  • the relevance and importance of land-based outdoor play and learning to overall health and well-being

Work-Integrated Learning
We believe it is necessary for students to have extensive experience in the profession to be successful as registered early childhood educators. Students can expect to have field experiences within the program and will be required to complete approximately 500-600 field experience hours over three semesters. During these three semesters, students may have field experiences including but not limited to working with families and children (various age groups) in licensed child care or preschool settings, EarlyON Child and Family Centres, various community programs, full-day kindergarten, home-based child care programs, before- and after-school programs, or other specialized settings. Field experience completion requirements specific to age groupings, setting types, and experience directly with children will be outlined when enrolled in the program. A different placement for Semesters 2, 3, and 4 ensures a range of experiences prior to graduation and equips students with a range of networks within the community to explore employment in the future.

In the ECE program, Field Experience 1 begins in Semester 2. Clearance requirements will be reviewed during Semester 1 and will need to be fully completed before the start of Semester 2 when students will begin to participate in field experiences.

2025 President's International Entrance Award

International Entrance Scholarships

To support students starting their educational journey at Humber, as of April 14, 2025, international applicants currently living outside of Canada who do not yet have a Humber DLI study permit are eligible for consideration for the President’s International Entrance Award.

International students who apply to an eligible full-time Humber program starting in Fall 2025 or Winter 2026, accept their offer of admission and submit their study permit application to IRCC between April 14 and June 13, 2025, may receive a $2,000 bursary.

To receive and retain the award, applicants must:

  • Accept an offer of admission to a full-time program at Humber (not including the English for Academic Purposes program)?before June 13, 2025. The offer must be for a program starting in Fall 2025 or Winter 2026. Applicants with a prior Fall 2025 or Winter 2026 application or 2025 PAL, issued before April 14, 2025, will not be considered.
  • Apply for a study permit before June 13, 2025. This will be confirmed by Humber through IRCC’s Letter of Acceptance (LOA) verification process.
  • Pay the $3,000 deposit by the due date on the LOA.
  • Pay the remaining program and ancillary fees by the due date on the LOA.
  • Register and remain enrolled as a full-time international student paying international fees past the withdrawal deadline (the 10th day of classes) for the awarded start term.
  • Not receive a refund of the fees paid for the awarded start term.

Please Note:

  • If these conditions are not met, the award will be revoked.
  • The award is granted only once per student across the two eligible start terms (Fall 2025, Winter 2026).
  • The award is non-refundable. If the award results in an overpayment of fees, the excess funds will be automatically applied towards fees for the next semester.

New students starting their Diploma and/or Advanced Diploma studies are eligible for consideration for an international entrance scholarship at Humber. This scholarship offers a CAD 2,000 reduction in tuition fees during the first two semesters of study (CAD 1,000 per semester).

Further details of this scholarship are:

  1. Humber may consider high school students who have demonstrated academic excellence for the international entrance scholarship, but due to the limited number of scholarships available, only those with the highest GPA (Grade Point Average) will be awarded. Humber's admissions team will calculate the GPA based on the high school transcripts received during the admissions assessment process. No separate application is required for the International Entrance Scholarship, as the awards are automatically granted to eligible candidates after they commence their studies.
  2. A total of 20 scholarships will be awarded to new students starting in September, 15 scholarships will be awarded to new students starting in January, and 5 scholarships will be awarded to new students starting in May. Per every starting semester, each recipient must come from a different country. In other words, no more than one student from any single country may receive the award within the same starting semester.
  3. The award will be applied towards the student's MyHumber account as a credit after the 10th day of classes in two instalments of CAD 1,000. Both payments will be applied to the second semester. The scholarship recipient is still required to pay the full amount for the first semester.
  4. Only successful recipients will be notified after the Day 10 of their 1st-semester studies.
