US economy creates 243,000 jobs in January
February 16th, 2012The US economy created 243,000 jobs in January, the highest total for nine months, official figures show. The rise was much more than expected.
Analysts had forecast an increase of about 150,000 jobs. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.3%, which was the lowest rate in nearly three years, and down from a revised rate of 8.5% in December.
News of the jobs growth caused shares to rocket up, with the Dow Jones index up 156 points at 12,862, its highest level since May 2008. The Nasdaq index, which specializes in technology companies, soared to its highest level since December 2000 by the close of trading on Friday.
Employment boost
However, a report on Wednesday by the US Congressional Budget Office, a federal agency, forecast that unemployment would climb to nearly 9% in the last three months of this year and peak at 9.2% early next year.
Data from the Labor Department showed job growth had been widespread, with large gains in business services, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing. Leisure and hospitality, which includes restaurants and hotels, added 44,000 jobs.
Retailers added nearly 11,000 jobs, and professional and business services, which includes higher paying jobs in accounting, architecture and engineering, gained 70,000 – the most in 10 months.
Obama’s challenge now is to turn raw data into a general belief that things are getting better.
Factories added 50,000 workers, much more than expected and a one-year high.
Retailers added 10,500 workers and construction employment rose by 21,000. Analysts believe the figure was helped by a mild US winter, which boosted employment in those sectors. The report was also buoyed by revisions to November and December data, which showed 60,000 more jobs created across the two months than previously reported.
Lindsey Piegza, economist at FTN Financial, said: “It was a better-than-expected report, the strongest report that we’ve seen in quite some time.
The figures add to a range of data pointing to a gradual US economic recovery.
Immigration & Job Opportunities
Improved job opportunities for Foreign Students in Australia
February 16th, 2012A new report reveals that international students graduating in Australia now get more chances to find work in their fields of study.
The report produced by Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) reveals that employer demand for international graduates grew last year with the proportion of employers recruiting foreign graduates at 31 percent, a significant increase after the effects of the global crisis 2008.
These fluctuations are well correlated with changes to the Australian government’s general skilled migration program which encourages foreign students to live in Australia and find a job here.
GCA Executive Director Dr Noel Edge said the results would motivate international students to study in Australia. “There appear to be more employment opportunities for international graduates and we hope to see this grow into the future,” Edge added
Focusing on six main fields of employment, the GCA report reveals that the biggest increase in the proportion of employers hiring international graduates was from the communication, technology and utilities sector. In 2011, accounting and finance; manufacturing; and construction, mining and engineering sectors attracted more international graduates compared to the last two years. In addition, the shortage of IT workers may have affected the employment rate for international graduates, the report indicates.
Thousands granted Australian Citizenship on Australia Day
February 16th, 2012On Australia Day, 26 January 2012, around 13,700 people from 144 countries were welcomed as new Australian citizens, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen MP announced.
Australia Day is considered a very special day for every Australian and the day has become the most popular day of the year for citizenship ceremonies, with 365 ceremonies held across the country this year.
“Australia Day is a special time for all Australians, whether they are citizens by birth or by choice, to come together to celebrate our common bond,” Mr. Bowen said. .
Citizenship is about more than just a ceremony and plays an important part of Australia Day celebrations. “It is also a great opportunity for all of us to reflect on what it means to be an Australian citizen and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of Australian citizenship,” the Minister expressed.
More than four million people have become Australian citizens since 1949 when the first citizenship ceremony was held, enriching Australia’s culture and traditions.
International Students Contribute to Ottawa Economy
February 16th, 2012According to the statistics from the head of Ottawa’s international student program, each international student contributes about $30,000 to their local economy.
The statistics show that the number of foreign students pursuing a high school diploma in Canada has surged dramatically, boosting both the local and national economies.
Other figures from Citizenship and Immigration Canada show that more than 180,000 international students created $6.5 billion revenue for the country in 2008. A large amount of the money raised by international students goes directly to the local schools to help build programs and assist teaching staff. Jane Alexander, principal of Brookfield High School in Ottawa, said that about 1 in every 10 of her students is an international student. Ms. Alexander indicated that it is a huge benefit to the school, adding “It’s a challenging time of life to be in high school and certainly I expect that being away from your home country and in a new country is even more of a challenge.”
International students can learn so much from their new environment. Shun Naito, a Japanese grade 10 student, explained that he chose Brookfield to immerse himself in the English language because there were not so many Japanese students and felt it would be quicker to learn English.
One of the difficulties faced by local programs and students is choosing the right home-stay family.
“It’s like dating,” said Geoff Best, who coordinates Ottawa’s student program, “You find the right family, you can stay there or you just don’t click. They’ll have to move and we do that.”
Canada Immigration plans to introduce changes to immigration rules for skilled trades
February 16th, 2012Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney announced this week that changes are coming to Canada’s immigration system soon. According to Kenney, the changes will make the system more flexible in an effort to combat labor shortages.
Kenney said Canadian immigration is planning to change the points system they currently use for selecting immigrants to make it easier for applicants in skilled trades to qualify for Canadian skilled immigration. This means the focus would be on admitting more trades people as opposed to just university-educated immigrants like engineers and doctors.
“People who are skilled trade’s people have an almost impossible job of coming to Canada under our current system because the skilled worker program basically selects people with advanced university degrees,” Kenney said.
He added that once the government opens up the border to more skilled workers, they can attract “hidden jewels” that can help fill labor shortages.
UK Tier 2 and Tier 5 Visa Applications to Move Online
February 16th, 2012The UK Border Agency has announced that Tier 2 and Tier 5 visa applicants and their dependants in the UK will be able to apply for their visa online from February 14, 2012.
Migrants and their dependants who are living in the UK and who want to extend their permission to stay (further leave to remain) under the Tier 2 visa or Tier 5 visa categories, will be able to complete an online application form. Applicants will also be able to pay their visa application fee and make an online booking for an appointment at a public enquiry office if they want to use the premium service.
In order for an online application to be valid, the following requirements must be met.
Non-premium applicants must:
- Submit any required supporting documents within 15 working days; and
- Book and attend an appointment at a public enquiry office to provide biometric information by the date the UK Border Agency requests them to.
Premium applicants must:
- Attend an appointment at a public enquiry office to submit any required supporting documents and provide biometric information when requested, within 45 working days.
Applicants are reminded that the online or premium services do not guarantee the success of any UK visa application. If any of the visa or application requirements are not met, applications will be rejected.
The application date will be the date when applicants submit their online application and the application fee payable will be the fee that is in place on the date of the online submission. There is no requirement to pay any fee difference if the fee changes between the date of the online submission and the date of submitting supporting documents or attending an appointment at the public enquiry office.
UK to attract only the Best and Brightest Migrants
February 16th, 2012The UK plans to change its immigration policy to attract only the best and brightest migrants, according to Immigration Minister Damian Green.
According to the Minister, the government will introduce new rules as part of the transformation of the UK’s immigration policy that aims to accept “fewer but better” migrants. The proposed policy will give priority to wealthy migrants, world class artists, musicians and intellectuals while excluding migrants who may become a burden on the state.
“What we need is a system that goes out to seek those people who are either going to create jobs or wealth or add to the high-level artistic and cultural aspirations we have,” the Minister indicated. He also added that the new policy would reduce immigration levels and attract only the very best.
The new rules would require partner visa applicants to demonstrate an annual household income of at least £26,000.”The idea of coming here from day one and living on benefits: people will think that’s unfair. The family will need to show it can support them,” told the Minister.
Similarly, the new rules would make it more difficult for those living in the UK on work visas to qualify for UK residency.
“You have to show genuine serious usefulness to British society. What we are saying is: if you are a particularly exceptional person we will make it easy for you to come here in the first place and we will allow you to stay for a certain amount of time and in some categories we will make it easier for you to stay here,” Mr. Green concluded.
Continual growth in the number of U.S. Visas issued to Indians
February 16th, 2012As the U.S. government simplifies its visa application process, a year-on-year growth of 14 percent in visa processing for Indian citizens is being targeted according to James W. Herman, minister-counselor for consular affairs at the US embassy in India.
In 2011, nearly 700,000 U.S visa applications were processed by the U.S. consular team in India and a record 67,105 H1B work visas were issued. The U.S. consular team in India processes almost 65 percent of the world’s H1B visa applications.
“We target 14 percent year-on-year growth in visa processing at least for the next 10 years. By 2020, our target is to issue 2.1 million visas for Indian travelers,” stated Herman whilst adding that there will be an increase in all the visa categories but the maximum growth would be in the tourist visa segment.
In order to improve and speed up the visa process, the U.S embassy in India has increased the number of staff by over 60 percent in the last five years, opened two new consulates (one in Hyderabad in 2009 and one in Mumbai last year) and introduced a number of innovative measures. The diplomat said 97 percent of visas are processed within 24 hours, and the wait time for visa appointments is currently 10 days or less. “Applicants wait less than one hour for services at the embassy and consulates. That means if you come at 10 a.m., the whole process will be over by 11 am”
DHS outlines plans to attract Skilled Immigrants to the U.S.
February 16th, 2012The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently announced its upcoming reform to make the visa process easier for highly-skilled immigrants who want to work in the U.S.
In line with President Obama’s efforts to make the United States an attractive destination for immigrants who can help create more jobs and boost the economy, the DHS proposes potential measures, including creating a “Startup Visa,” strengthening the H1B visa program and “stapling” green cards to the diplomas of certain foreign-born graduates in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
The Department also noted that the Obama Administration is working to make improvements on existing programs.
As part of that effort, the DHS plans to make the following changes:
- Expanding eligibility for the 17-month extension of optional practical training (OPT) for F-1 international students who hold a degree in STEM fields;
- Allowing additional part-time study for spouses of F-1 students, and expanding the number of Designated School Officials (DSOs) at schools certified by DHS to enroll international students;
- Providing work authorization for spouses of certain H-1B visa holders;
- Allowing outstanding professors and researchers to present more of their academic achievements in support of their visa applications;
- Changing the rules to treat H-1B1 visa and E-3 visa holders the same as other employment-based H-1B and L-1 visa holders, allowing them to continue working with their current employer for up to 240 days while they are waiting for their extensions of status; and
- Creating an “Entrepreneurs in Residence initiative” at the end of this February to create a forum, in which the federal government and key members from the entrepreneurial community, academia and federal government can discuss the best way to attract foreign entrepreneurial talent.

If you’re on the lookout for a scholarship to bankroll your education, the pointers offered below will come in handy.
Sharpen your search skills: Very often, securing a scholarship successfully means that you know where to look rather than just hunting at random. Start brushing up your scholarship search skills much before you need the money; talk to people who’ve gone down the same road before you; do what you have to do to qualify for each scholarship; enlist the Internet and free online search services in your search efforts. Once you’ve shortlisted the ones that you do qualify or, read the applications from top to bottom. Get the documentation you need to support your application ready before you start filling out your forms. Be very careful to read each section and question before you fill in details about your personal and academic lives. Before you send in your application, check to see if you’ve done all that you need to correctly. Take care to send in your applications well before the due date. Some scholarships have post-by dates as deadlines, so read the instructions carefully to avoid losing out on good scholarships due to trivial technicalities.
Follow up on your applications: Your job is not over once you’ve sent in the applications. You must check to see if you’re received a reply every now and then. Most institutions set deadlines for your acceptance, so you risk losing the financial aid if you do not respond in time. If you’re going to be away, get a friend or family member to keep tabs on your email or letterbox for you.
Perseverance is the keyword to success: Even if you’ve been rejected time after time, don’t give up. If you’re serious about your education and know that it’s a way out of your current life and a passport to your new one, keep on looking for scholarship offers and sending in your applications.
Learn from past mistakes: If you’re rejected one too many times, take stock of what you’ve been doing and check to see where you’re going wrong. Find out if you meet all the qualifications that each scholarship sets. Seek help from someone who’s been there and done that, and who’s had more success than you seem to be having.
Avoid these most common mistakes made on Scholarship Applications
February 16th, 20121. Apply only if you are eligible. Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully. Make sure you are eligible before you send in your application.
2. Complete the application in full. If a question does not apply to you, note that on the application. Do not leave a question blank. Be sure to supply all additional supporting materials, including transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays.
3. Follow directions. Provide everything that is required. However, do not supply things that are not requested–you could be disqualified.
4. Neatness counts. Always type your application, or if you must print do so neatly and legibly. Make a couple of photocopies of all the forms before you fill them out. Use the copies as working drafts as you develop your application packet.
5. Write an essay that makes a strong impression. The key to writing a strong essay is to be personal and specific. Include concrete details to make your experience come alive: The simplest experience can be monumental if you honestly present how you were affected.
6. Watch all deadlines. To help keep yourself on track, impose your own deadline that is at least two weeks prior to the official deadline. Use the buffer time to make sure everything is ready on time. Do not rely on extensions–very few scholarship providers allow them at all.
7. Make sure your application gets where it needs to go. Put your name (and Social Security number, if applicable) on all pages of the application. Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.
8. Keep a back-up file in case anything goes wrong. Before sending the application, make a copy of the entire packet. If your application goes astray, you will be able to reproduce it quickly.
9. Give it a final ‘once-over.’ Proofread the entire application carefully. Be on the lookout for misspelled words or grammatical errors. Ask a friend, teacher, or parent to proofread it as well.
10. Ask for help if you need it. If you have problems with the application, do not hesitate to call the funding organization.
