Important Vocabulary for IELTS Writing

Academic Word List The list contains forms of a word and ways the word can be used in different circumstances. E.g. ‘analyse’ can have form like analysis, analyst, analyses etc.

Idioms These are a group of words with a meaning not deducible from its individual words. E.g. ‘Over the moon’, ‘Take for a ride’, etc. These help improve band score.

Collocations These are usually two or three words commonly placed together. These also help improve band scores. E.g. to catch a cold, to come on time, etc.

Phrasal Verbs Verbs used with a preposition or an adverb. When spoken together, their meaning is different from individual words. E.g. put up with, put on the table etc.

Topic Vocabulary Topic vocabulary are words that can be grouped together for a certain topic. E.g. The words for topic Education can be school, institute etc.
