Program Overview

This LLM, offered by Queen Mary's Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) in partnership with the Institute of Art and Law (IAL) is a unique and challenging programme exploring the legal issues surrounding art and cultural objects. You’ll get an in-depth understanding of the workings of the law when it comes to the arts industry and cultural property, as well as the application of the law in everyday practice.

If you choose the Art Business and Law LLM, you’ll explore – and contribute to – a relatively new legal area.

Taught by our CCLS staff, this exciting and innovative LLM focuses on the legal aspects of doing business in the international art world. You’ll also be taught by members of the Institute of Art and Law (IAL) and expert practitioners. The IAL offers, through its research, educational and publishing experience, a depth of knowledge of the art law field, more broadly conceived, unrivalled elsewhere.

This LLM is taught in the heart of London, the second largest art market in the world.

As part of the programme, we organise visits and discussions at some of the most influential art establishments in the UK. Previously, this has included guided tours of the British Museum, The Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the auction house Bonhams, together with legal discussions of their collections and practices (this is subject to social distancing regulations).
