Many students move out
of their home country to get a better education. It Might be a little difficult
for the student to adjust to a country with totally different cultures.
Initially, the student might get the happy rush of moving to a new country, but
gradually they might feel homesick. Many students could not fly to their home
country when coronavirus hit. Staying away from family and friends at this time
has taken a toll on many students.
May is considered to be Mental Health Month, so it is a good time to talk about mental health and its stigma. There are a few ways to cope with stress, and this blog will help you explore some of them.
Impact of covid-19 on Students Mental Health
On February 2021 study revealed an increase in mental health challenges in adults. The increase in mental health challenges is not restricted to one nation only. For students, the abrupt closing of universities, distance from family and friends, and loss of income have led to more mental strain. It is very important to speak about and treat it. Living life with stress and anxiety can lead to long-term issues.
We'll take you through a few ways to help students improve their mental health while studying abroad.
1. Keep Yourself Grounded
Some people are overthinkers and keep thinking something or the other. Grounding mental exercises is a good way to turn your mind away from stressful thoughts. Some students may also find meditation helpful in controlling their thoughts.
2. Move Your Body
Moving your body helps in uplifting ones mood. Walking, doing yoga, and running etc., can help in lowering stress levels. Sitting and using the electronic device can be more daunting if you are stressed. Doing any physical activity that you enjoy can help you manage anxiety and stress.
3. Love yourself
Stop criticizing yourself for no reason. Hating yourself would only lead to the accumulation of negative thoughts. Embrace your imperfections and practice self-compassion. Few ways of practicing self-compassion are
- Understand yourself
- Spend more time alone
- Accept your imperfections
- Do not compare yourself with others
- Do things you love
4. Maintain Connection
Social Connection is very important to improve your mental health. No matter how dull the outside environment is, you can always cheer yourself up by talking to people who matter to you. Do not ignore your family members and friends back home. Talk to them every day through video or voice calling. Listen to their day-to-day activities, and do not cut your strings with them.
5. Ask For Help
Reaching out for help is very important when you're struggling with your mental health. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, or any other mental health issue, do not hesitate to speak to a counselor. Contacting a counselor may help in getting you rid of anxiety, stress and other mental health struggles. Talking to someone capable of supporting you is an important step towards healing. Do not ignore your mental health. It is essential to have a relieved mind to enjoy life.
