Driving License & Vehicle Registration

A valid driver's license from any country is good in Canada for a period of 3 months. It is expected that during these three months, the person will make application for a Driver's License (in the province where a person is staying). In Canada, the provincial and territorial government -where the driver is residing- issues the driving license. Thus, the overall requirements remaining same, specific regulations relating to driver's licenses vary with provinces. All provinces have provisions which allow the non-residents to use licenses issued by other provinces and International Driving Permits. They also allow non-residents to use regular licenses issued by other states and countries. Even the Canadian licenses are valid in many other nations due to various international agreements and treaties.

AMA Registries will register your vehicle and renew your driver’s license quickly and easily. In order to get a Michigan driver's license, you must pass a written test, a road sign test, a vision test, and a driving test.

Alberta

Students having a valid International Driver's License are permitted to drive in Alberta legally for 12 months. But they need to be insured by their home insurance policy. If you happen to get involved in a car accident, resulting in a personal injury or property damage over 0, the police must be notified. Also, you must remain at the scene of the accident until the investigating officers clear it. After obtaining Alberta Driver's License, you must also obtain Alberta Driver's Insurance.

Ontario

All new drivers applying for their first car or motorcycle licence enter Ontario's Graduated Licensing System (GLS). Graduated licensing lets new drivers get driving experience and skills gradually. The two-step licensing process takes not less than 20 months for completion.

You should be at least 16 years old and pass a vision test and a test of your knowledge of the rules of the road and traffic signs, for getting this license. You will get a Class G1 or M1 licence after getting this license. Two road tests have to be cleared for becoming fully licensed.

New drivers earn full driving privileges in two stages and have five years to complete the program (Classes G1, G2, M2 or M2 with condition "L") and graduate to a full licence (Classes G, M or M with condition L).

Class G2

New drivers need to hold a G2 licence for not less than 12 months before attempting the G2 road test. You have more privileges due to your driving experience, at this level. After getting this license, you are eligible to drive without an accompanying driver on all Ontario roads anytime. But, you shall be required to:

  • Maintain a zero blood alcohol level while driving;
  • Ensure that the number of passengers in the vehicle is limited to the number of working seat belts.

Classes of Learner's Licenses: There are two different types of Learner's Licence in Nova Scotia:

Requirements:

Proof of Age:
You must be 18 years of age for getting this license.

You will be required to visit one of the offices for applying for a Learner's Licence, so that you can take the tests.
Vision test:
The Vision test includes tests for color perception; field of vision (minimum120 degrees); sharpness of vision (minimum 20-40); and distance judgment. If you fail, you will have to get a form signed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Also, you will be required to have proper glasses or contacts before a licence will be issued.
Knowledge Test:
You have to pass a written test, having 2 parts: One is on traffic and safe driving rules; Second is on Nova Scotia highway signs. Each part has 20 multiple-choice questions, and you have to get at least 16 right on each part to pass. Both the tests have to be cleared for getting licence. If you fail one part, you have to take the entire test over.
Test Receipt:
The Knowledge test has to be paid in advance. The cost is .40 (tax included). You get a "Knowledge Test Receipt," after paying and you have to turn in that receipt when you want to take the test.
