Before Applying

The applicant must have been accepted at a recognized Canadian school, university or college before applying for a study permit. You will have to choose a program you wish to study, the institutions offering that program, identify the institutions where you are willing to study and will be accepted. We advise you to even calculate the education costs, before selecting a particular institution.

Information about choosing a School, College, or University in Canada:

Applying to a School, College or University:

After choosing a place to study, the student will be required to apply to that school, college or university. You should apply early, at least 6 months, for your chosen course at your chosen institution. We recommend the University and college students to apply a year before willling to start their studies.

You would receive an acceptance letter from the school, if you are accepted at that particular institution. This letter of acceptance will be required for applying for a Study Permit.


Health insurance

The government of Canada does not pay for the medical costs of foreign students. Different provinces have different health coverage for foreign students.


Study Permit:

A study permit and a temporary resident visa would be required for entering Canada as an international student.


Applying for a Study Permit

The officer will process your application for a Temporary Resident Visa as well as a Study Permit. A separate application is not required by the student. The following steps are involved while applying for a study permit:


Medical Examination:

The students can be required clearing a medical exam if he/she:


Instructions on how to proceed with a medical examination will be sent to you, if it is essential. In case you happen to require a medical examination processing of your application can possibly take at least three extra months.


Police Certificates/Certificate of Good Conduct:

Criminal Record
In case you have not already got a police certificate for good conduct when submitting your application, you can be required to get it done. A visa officer may request a police certificate to verify your admissibility to Canada. There are chances that people who have committed or been convicted of a crime or offence, are prohibited from entering Canada. Criminal or security background shall be performed by Police agencies. These checks may be done for anyone 18 years of age and over applying for a Study Permit.

NOTE:
In case you happen to move or change your address or your telephone number, prior to the completion of the processing of your application, you must inform Citizenship and Immigration Canada of this new information. You should contact the Visa Office where you submitted your application. For more assistance, consult our expert counselors.

IMP:
There is no guarantee of acceptance when you apply for a study permit. The final steps including purchasing plane tickets or quitting your job, should not be taken until your visa is stamped.
