Melbourne
Overview
Melbourne is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. The city itself, laid out in a large rectangle and boasting a lively and cosmopolitan pulse, sits on the northern banks of the Yarra River, about five kilometers from the bay. Sophisticated and slick, edgy and rough, Melbourne’s physical and cultural landscape is shaped by a dynamic population, ever-ravenous for a bite of global culture. Melbournians are much more passionate about it than Sydneysiders are of their city, and it is clearly revealed by them. Melbourne is a cultural melting pot.
Almost a third of Melbournians were born overseas or have parents who were born overseas. You could forget you're in Australia, with such a diverse population, and with trams rattling through the streets and stately European architecture surrounding you. Ornate Victorian-era architecture and leafy, established boulevards reflect the city’s history, and cutting-edge developments such as Federation Sq exemplify its enigmatic contemporary style. The character-filled city produces some of the best art, music, cuisine, fashion, performance, design and ideas in the world. Melbourne has an inclination to plummet from searing heat to drizzling rain in the space of an hour.
Melburnians still keep their urban frenzy to a deliciously sedate pace. Trams can be seen lumbering back and forth on routes radiating out like spokes from central Melbourne, and a common way to get around is cycling. They love to shop, eat and attend the myriad festivals that the city offers.
You would surely believe – Melbourne is the most livable cities.
