To provide a chance to the students whose degrees stand suspended, in response to Supreme Courts orders, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has started the process of registration for engineering students to write a test, on clearing which the degrees will stand validated.

On Sunday, December 3, 2017 AICTE and UGC started the registration of candidates enrolled in deemed-to-be universities from 2001 to 2005, and were awarded degrees or diplomas in engineering through distance mode. Candidates have been given time till January 15 to register for the test. The degrees will remain suspended till they clear the written test. The entrance exam will be conducted in May or June, 2018.

A written as well as practical examination will be conducted for the students.

In its major move to regulate the standards of higher education in India, Supreme Court has asked University Grant Commission (UGC) to stop deemed-to-be-universities from using the word 'University' in their names. The deemed status is granted to higher education institutes doing quality work in a particular stream.

The leading educational institutes could lose their 'deemed to be' status if they fail to accept of a University Grants Commission (UGC) directive to drop 'university' from their names.

Complying with the orders of the Supreme Court UGC has issued notices to 123 such institutes. These institutes cannot be called universities because their expertise is not multidisciplinary but the deemed tag brings academic status and privileges of a university.
